Slick, stop for a second and settle.

I'm an ex-honda guy as well. Integra LS - 1991. It was fun for the two or three months that I had it but I lost interest quickly as it just wasn't for me (FF :|)... sold it off to my brother who gave it to his fiancee. I didn't do much tinkering to the car, but my brother did some work - exhaust, chip, headers, CAI, suspension. The car felt a lot more alive after that. The same can be said for cars of friends and family that have had minor, and major, modifications: the brothers Nissan Exa, R32GTS-t, S13 & S14 Sylvia (200SX), Ford XR8 (5.4L V8), Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. All of these cars seemed to improve drastically with small upgrades here and there.

Now, in the three or so months that I've been lurking around this site and others, such as e30zone.co.uk and e30tech, I know that these guys know what they're talking about. These German cars are very different to Japanese made vehicles and even locally (my locally, not US) made stuff. When I first got the car I couldn't believe how well put together it was, I was hoping to get some major improvements out of the car with upgrades similar to what my brother had done with the 'teg. The masses on the net didn't seem to think it was possible.

So I even went to a euro car specialist who told me that it "was not bloody likely". My usual mechanic was also a BMW Tech for 12 years and while he mainly worked on the 5 and 7 series he said, that they're all the same - they're all built about as good as they can get out of the factory. This is a completely different philosophy to how Japanese cars are built - esp. Honda's (as they really try and promote their aftermarket gear)...

While your optimism is great, don't get your hopes too high. You'll be disappointed. Which is why you should listen to everything (mostly :P) that these guys are telling you.

You attempted to show that you knew more about these cars than everybody else. You didn't just say - "OMG I didn't think that that many mods could produce so little gain". You flat-out denied it was possible, then tried to come up with theories explaining it.

fella, i'm new to BMW but not to autos-- an example, if u make a statement, like that guy did, about spending so much and making so little improvement, to any other gearhead, their jaw would drop.. my jaw did ..i asked some obvious questions that would hold true in any other version of auto mechanics-- i still can't come to believe it -- apparently its true, so many of you can't be incorrect. i'd be hella disappointed if i spent so much --i'm so very glad that i know what to expect now.. i could of ended up broke & slow ... lol
-- at that time, i asked, becuz i've SEEN dynos off calibration, and seen ECU upgrades that didn't account for a cam upgrade.. --hell , i see that $250 cam on ebay for the i motor or he could have bought a OEM replacement spec... how the hell am i to know that core/type/grind/lift/duration he's got -- you are right ..i should have said nothing -
