Nice buy. It has an old 'fortech' kit on it. I had a fully built 77 with 1275 and 40DCOE weber with all of the goodies, sold it at the end of 2009 after building it, and re-building it over and over from the ground up.

I'm currently building a 76 for my dad right now and have a 78 Clubman waiting for restoration.

If you have any questions I could either answer or point you in the right direction.

yeah, I picked it up for less that 3k, I also had seen the car up on CL for like a year priced way too much for what it was. But he had come down a lot since I saw it last.

Yes it is definitely a cooper S as you said because of the two gas tank fill cap holes and yes I'm quite sure that your girlfriends scooter is faster than this 998 engine, lol. I didn't know that there were actually other people up on this board that have these.

Quick update: I haven't really done too much on the car since I got it, but I have put in a lot of necessary (temporary) wiring (note how shitty it looks). And fixed the god awful shifter. I don't know if you guys had the same problem relating to that, the car has a rod change transmission, and the shift lever would not function really. So when I took it over to my shop and looked down into the shift carrier (I guess thats what you call it), there was a bit of metal cast into the bottom of it that would prevent the shifter from moving over to the first/second gear selector. So I ground off the bottom of the shift lever so it wouldn't hit the little bit of metal. Is that normal, or did the PO install the rod change wrong?

the other thing that tells me its an "S" is that it has a 120mph speedometer....Very rare piece...I co-drove a 1964 rally cooper S in England..it was motivated by a 1430cc a series coupled to a straight cut jack knight dog box and fed with split 45 webers...the thing would haul

Looks like ur holding some good potential there . I like that ur goin back to the 1275 I've always had some love for these cars. I would like to see it In action when u get it in tip top shape I'm sure is gonna be a fun track car.

I think it was a Cooper S, you can see where the holes for the twin gas tanks have been filled. I swear my girlfriends 49cc scooter is faster than the 998 lol.

You guys are going about it all wrong, see...
Stock bottom end, twin cam k1100 BMW motorcycle head with some machine work.
Intantly double your horsepower with a 1275. Plus those trumpets look and sound so awesome, you'll want a clear hood.

Prolly because $5k is pushing it for a classic Mini in that condition. They've also obviously destroyed the marketability of the car to the majority of potential owners with the body work, stripped interior and paint. Most people would want to revert it to a the way it used to look, and $5k is way too high a starting point to do that.

I paid $7.5k for mine and it looks like a show quality car comparatively (and it isn't even close).
