    New here

Names Tony and I just picked up this '84 318i after looking for along time and finding a deal I couldn't resist. She doesn't run at the moment, but we'll get to that later. Here's a couple of pics.

The engine is partially disassembled and there is no ecu. From what I have found looking around on the net, she has a m10b18, but I can't seem to find which ecu goes with that engine code. So I'm wondering if it is possible to start the engine with out it or would I need one to even start the engine. My dilema is that I don't wanna buy an ecu only to find out that the engine is dead. Previous owner said that there were timing problems with her so he decided to start to rip her apart only to get discouraged and sold her to me.

Any help you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.

since you have no engine you could buy a M42 and have fun with it

Don't bother buying anything for the M10. Thank the previous owner for putting sport seats in too.

depending on what you bought the car for, it may be worth the time and trouble to upgrade to an m42, or even an m50.. That would be fun.

The M42 is rather cheap, and reliable, and would make more power for your '84. I'd say go for it.

I had seen his thread lat night while I was looking through the site and the last thing listed as sold on his list is the engine/etc.

So the M42 is the I6 from the other e30's of is it still and I4 like the M10?

No the M42 is the I4, however, on a healthy M42 the high range (after 3,000 RPM) is very nice. However, if you look hard enough, you could probably find a nice M20 (I6 from the 325 E30's).

Its really up to you, and your pockets.

To answer your question, yes, you need an ECU to start the car.

haha.. yah i looked at this car and was gonna buy it just to part out the interior.

the PO picked it up at some mechanics foreclosure or something in dallas and the car crapped out on the way back. his friend tried to "fix" the engine by pulling the top end off

Tony, did you get it for $400?

Nope, picked it up for less than that.

BTW, do you know of anyone who has an engine fs local?

Yah I got him down to $200 but then I decided not to buy it

Look up Acorn Auto Salvage. They have lots of BMW Engines and stuff.

I had their card/number, but I can't find it right now.

Part it out. You'll make more than enough to buy another E30 in dcent shape. The seats and interior are worth some pennies, and that body is cleeeeeean. Maybe find another white e30, rusty fenders or peeling clearcoat, or even an accident? Use the parts from this car to make a nice one.

Not worth building that engine, or trying to put it back together, who knows what's missing/wrong with it now. It went through what, three mechanics?

Not gonna part it out, been thriough that before with an Integra and it was an absoute pain in the ass.

Most likely will save and just get an M50, and never know what it is like to drive and M10.

You should call up Terry Sayther in Austin where I work. Lots of parts cars and potential engines to swap in.
