    New to E30s

Just bought my first BMW a few weeks ago. Already learning they're a lot of work - and I don't have a garage!... Oh well she's a blast to drive tho! I bought the car with a spare engine which needed to be installed, so I bought it undriven, just on a prayer that the guy wasn't full of Schmidt. Fortunately it was in decent running condition, though it does need a tuneup which I think I can handle myself after working on my '74 Ghia for years. Which quick question - and I'm sure I could find it elsewhere in the forums, but the valves sound a little loud - how dire of an issue is valve adjustment?. I guess better sooner than later. Well, here she is:

Even properly adjusted valves will make noise when the engine is cold. If there is still a lot of noise when after the engine warms, I would go ahead and do it. Change the rocker shaft plugs and valve cover gasket while you're in there.

Yeah, it gets a little better when it warms up, but it's worst while I'm coasting or just barely on the gas. Thanks for the pointer, I'll take care of those as soon as I can.

No problem. It's a beautiful car.

If there is one absolutely necessary maintenance item, it's the timing belt. Sure there have been a bunch of belts that have lasted 100k+ miles, but in my opinion, unless you're really looking for an excuse to rebuild, bent valves aren't worth the risk.

Oh, yeah - Taken care of! Had my mechanic put one in the new motor before he dropped it in. Thanks, it was a really good buy, and my wife and I always loved the E30 look so we couldn't resist!
