    Random Brorbital day with Hexagone

Spring is here, and we had a 70+ degree weekend (maybe summer is more like it) and I got to spend it with le car.

While utterly cared for mechanically during its midwest life, the body had been a bit neglected. Scratches, nicks, and a nice hazy chalk-like brilliantrot that was more like brilliantpink were just a few of the problems.

In addition to that, the bumpers and mirrors had completely lost any shine, and were a flaky, dreary looking color. So I took matters into my own hands.

    Inspired by this actually:

    Pictures below:

Some minor interior work... but the carpets were more than I could handle

What do we have here? I wonder where this is going..

Couldn't get the bumper torx screws off, even with an impacts, so I improvised:

    yours truly

Did some work, and went out that night. Woke up and I believe my goodies were all ready:

    about that paint...

It's all in the prep. Do the prep. I couldn't have imagined having to clean all the trim after the work was done...

    slowly but surely

You know what really grinds my gears? The stupid fading undercoating. Let's fix that too while waiting on the wax

and I believe something actually came out of all this.

A guy in a 4.8is X5 had come up to me a few moments earlier and asked me if I was selling it

Not too bad for a $20 HVLP gun right? Perfect match too, gotta love single stage

    sharp lines

Paint flowed beautifully without having to buff it

    what chalky mirrors?

You may have noticed my shitty basketweaves sans caps

Stay tuned and look for another update this Wendsday when these come to life:

I'm awfully tempted to re spray my hood and trunk since there were so many deeper scratches in it.

Or do I keep the originality? I do have all original vins, hm.

Heh. I had never detailed a car before in my life, other than washing and one time I clay bar'ed some cement spray from my mom's accord.

                But here's what I did:

Spent the previous day touching up all chips and scratches that needed filling. In the morning, pre-wash, I wet sanded them to be flush (or as close to it)

Washed with two bucket method, clay bar'ed car, and taped off all trim edges. Went to work with the Griot's #3 polish. (the meguiar's sucked balls and was difficult to wipe off). Then I waxed the car (also using the orbital) and the Griot's Show wax. Let it sit for 3 hours as per instructions while I did the undercoating paint and had dinner. Came back and wiped the wax off. Simple.

                For the painting:

I could've gone the much more labor intensive route, but I was in a hurry. Scuffed everything I wanted to paint with 400 grit sand paper. Went with a lower grit for deeper scratches and then followed back up to 400. Blew off the dust, and wiped everything down with Xylene.

Took the pint of brilliantrot I had, mixed it 4:1:1 (get a mixing cup for this) with Urethane hardener and reducer and popped it into my gun. As noted, super cheap gun that just works as long as you keep it clean. Even my compressor is some garbage ass 30 gal craftsman that technically isn't even strong enough for HVLP guns. Don'ed my face respirator and went to town.

It was about 60 degrees when I shot it, so the paint didn't run too much. First coat was medium wet, and the 2nd I laid it down thick after 10 minutes (as per instructions). Closed garage and went out drinking.

Came back in the morning, and it was still a bit tacky (automotive paints aren't like aerosols). Left the parts out in the sunlight, and by the time they went back on the car, all the surfaces were nice and hard (although you shouldn't wax newly painted stuff).

                And that's that.
