SIR, PLEASE STEP AWAY FROM THE CAR. A lot of times, some really meaty shots come from putting the camera on a tripod, setting it way off from the car, and zooming way in, especially with your more basic camera with just one zoom lens permanently attached.
Also, see if you can get the car on a rise, and get underneath it a little bit. That often works out beautifully.
True enough, though they're getting better. I think the Sony DF828 has 7x now...my F707's only 5x i think, but that's been enough for some killer shots.

car is parked diagonal and the horizon is horizontal. geometry must have been tough.
