    The year was 1991...

High school graduation year, San Francisco. The Orb's song "Little Fluffy Clouds" just hit the airwaves. The cool kids all wore Stussy and Girbaud. I was looking forward to college... and driving a rusted, oil gushing, slushbox equipped, 1984 Ford Escort.

It was the end of the line for the E30 chassis as the E36 was about to replace it, but man did it look good going out with the recent facelift that added plastic bumpers, bigger taillights, and a host of small tweaks to make it shine.

The new car on the scene was the MR2 Turbo. Amid a sea of Integras and GTIs, this was a car roughly the same size, but packing real wheel drive, a mid engine, and best of all, a turbo.

They both cost just under $30,000 each.

I could afford neither, but I drooled after both. I convinced my dad to test drive them both that summer just so he could tell the salesman that he really needed his son to give it a try before he could commit to purchasing one. He happily obliged.

I've been through my share of good times and bad, but fast forward and they both now reside together in my garage. Funny how life works out sometimes.

My wife, girlfriend at the time drove a brand new white 92 MR2. Car was a stick and was such a fun car to drive. She still talks about it today and says she'd like to have another. Me on the other hand, I was driving an 86 325es, just living the dream. ;):D

It would have been cool growing up in the 90s. As little kid, I remember all of my cousins and their lifted Jeep Cherokees and shit. When I was in Kindergarten, I thought my dad's Peugeot 505 was the shit. I eventually got that car, and it now sits wrecked in the driveway.

Another thing about this car is that they look best stock.

Any mods on the MR-2? My friend used to have a John Reed tuned one that put down 503whp on the dyno with race gas. Stock head/stock block.

That is a great story... and you're local too! Do you ever make it out to any norcal meets?

I think Levent is going to be here this weekend...

Also, how does the mr2 drive compared to the e30? I know, apples to oranges, but i'm at the point in my life where I can actually afford an mr2 turbo. I would love to have one in my driveway.

I make it out to local meets from time to time and should be able to more towards the fall. The e30 and MR2 seemed so different at the time, but now compared to how newer cars all seem to drive, they somehow seem a lot more alike.

Mr2 was a little lighter than the regular e30 but hearing the MR-2 motor right behind you was always a cool thing. Car was that awesome!

Ah what a crappy year...I spent most of it in Saudi and Kuwait breathing the oil fire pollution.

Nice Mr, shame those have been disappearing last 5 years or so.
