The Red Headed Sl*t Is Back From The Dead! PIC HEAVY

Let's start from the beginning, shall we? This happened the Sunday directly after The Vintage in NC this May.
Well, I guess I should talk about my weekend.

    Saturday

I had an amazing time of course and it was another great year at Vintage. It was cool to meet Ottis and Steve Friday. There were SO many cars there that I still can't get my head around most of them.. As usual with Vintage. The car red head drove there with AC and purred along the interstates without any problems Friday. I put new spark plugs in and made sure all belts were good (except the timing belt cause I checked that last fall). I brought tools and the caravan of cars I rode with all did amazing. Even drove through major rain storm without any problems.

Here's what she looks like on Saturday (thanks for the pictures guys!)

    Sunday

So me and the little lady get up pretty early Sunday to get on the road to Atlanta. Nothing to really type about .. Nice and easy start to a 5 - 6 hour drive. Just a matter of taking I40W -> I77S -> I485 S ->I85S then home.
Around 11AM we were trucking along I77 cruising around 70mph (about 3.5k RPM's due to the 4.10LSD out back) then..

    BANG

We both were launched forward (seat belts locked up even). I pushed the clutch practically instantly. In that first millisecond I knew we didn't hit anything cause I was looking straight ahead and we were on open interstate. The 5th millisecond I looked down to see all lights were on in the car. The first second I released the clutch again while in gear to restart the car.. One full second into the event I new what had happened.

I only heard 1/2 of the engine spinning... That can only mean one thing.
So, I pulled us over to the side of the road. I tried to start the car with the starter and hear it. I popped of the rubber timing cover to verify my terror. Yep

    Snapped timing belt

So, here are a few pictures of her Sunday.

You'll notice she looks the same, but if you had an X-Ray machine you would see that a bomb went off inside the engine. The AC was really working amazing....

Here's my $400 ride home. Gas mileage was excellent though..

So, I'm not sure what I'm going to do now. I don't really have a shop to work out of, nor a motor standing by, nor any money 'cause I've been spending it all on the white car.

    Overall, I've had better Sundays.

    Cheers,
    Huff

Cliffs 60k timing belt snaps on the way home from NC car show. 3.5 months later, this is where we are.
    Enjoy!

                OK here we go

So Huff's timing belt snapped. It pretty much ruined cylinder 5 and the corresponding valves. So with that, Huff went searching for a donor motor. He found one in great condition in Atlanta the beginning of July and our friend Tony was kind enough to store it for a month. Huff and I picked the motor up with my 4runner and a trailer early August and the swap ensued.

                Poor Huff.

                Donor motor

                Workspace for the next week

                Waiting for the next morning

                Teardown begins

                Valves adjusted and looking good.

We went through the motor and tranny with a fine tooth comb. Replaced everything that needed to be replaced. We replaced the clutch and tranny with Huff's due to the "newness" of his parts

T-belt was 60k old. 4 years in the car.

                      Huff's car arrives

                      Friday evening
With the motor refreshed, Huff had his car towed over, A whopping 2 miles.
                      Looking happier....

In my backyard on the ramps to unhook any tranny danglers.

Close call on teh DTMs I miss having a lift at my disposal BTW.

An hour later the head is off to see the damage.

Then the broken bottom end comes out.

                      Super duper extreme removal angle!

Break for the night, resume Saturday morning.

                        Saturday motor install time!

Woke up around 10 to start the install. We swapped trannys, and clutches after inspection showed the donor's clutch was pretty done.
Obligitory look at me in the motor bay pic

                        Donor going in

                        20 minutes later...

The motor was in by 5:30 Saturday. Sunday was reserved for wiring and hooking everything else up. By sunday evening, everything was pretty much buttoned up, I needed to go through and make sure all was well monday Morning.
Monday everything checked out, we put the hood back on, and she was gone. Just like that. No more Redhead, just a couple of tired brunettes.
Huff putting the lip back on

                        Bye bye!

That's all. She runs great. We have a miller maf swap waiting to be installed once the 87 octane gas is used and replaced by 93.
                        Thanks for looking R3V

We don't really believe in DOHC in my camp (not that there's anything wrong with them). I hear complaints about M20s all day here, but all I know is if you take your time, and complete maintanance issues in a timely mannar, they run for a long time. The only DOHC I would put in this car would have been an m42... We actually kicked a supercharged m42 around for a second. This m20 was next to nothing, and it came with a miller maf swap including the ecu with chip. For guys like me, 24V guys are great. They pretty much GIVE their M20s away ;)
