Believe me, I wanted to but I felt I could make the power I wanted without stroking. 2.5 liters is achieved by increased bore and stroke. The problem is the evo cranks price doubled within the last 8 years. At $1500 it's hard to justify the expense for only a 3mm longer stroke, slightly HP increase and 10 more ft lbs of torque. This engine even stroked out isn't known for monster torque anyway."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

Those are very dismal numbers for the money. I don't think I would have done it either, no matter how cool.Believe me, I wanted to but I felt I could make the power I wanted without stroking. 2.5 liters is achieved by increased bore and stroke. A friend of mine knew of one for sale. I had told him I was passively looking for a white one and this one happen to be white, running, mechanically sound and was a good price. It even came with a few goodies on it. I never bought a car on whim like that but I figured it was worth it and I jumped on it before it could be advertised anywhere. It's definitely been a project but nothing too exotic.

S14's can and often do last a long time provided you maintain them which includes 20-25K valve adjustments. They are high strung big 4 bangers and are often driven hard. If you're not driving them hard, they are very underwhelming. Maybe an M10/M42 guy could get it right away but an M20/M50 guy will need to learn this...I know I did. Obviously the more high strung, the less life span the engine has. I did a mild performance build with close to stock compression, 284/276 cams that don't require shim under buckets or any other head mods, no 2.7 liters with crazy rod angles, no boost, NOS and I replaced all of the paper/cork gaskets with Yamabond 4+ sealant so it shouldn't leak a drop (which they often do). So I fully expect this engine to last 200K-300K miles. Nothing was wrong with my engine mechanically before I rebuilt it. I was chasing a flooding problem and kinda dove in head first as I suspected it was tired anyway. I ended up rebuilding the engine which is okay because I figured it was better to do it now rather than later.

BTW, the cause of the flooding was a bad coolant temp sensor and the NEW Bosch sensor I replaced it with also ended up going bad (didn't know this at the time) so I kept looking elsewhere for the culprit. It wasn't until we tried EVERYTHING else that Robert (E30 motorwerks) tried a third Coolant temp sensor and it fired right up. It also didn't help that one of the rebuilt 30lb injectors I installed was dead. Coulda been bad from the get go or clogged from just sitting on my desk for almost a year...who knows. Moral of the story is just because a part is rebuilt or new, doesn't mean it's working as it should! Check and verify they are working...then check again.Last edited by reelizmpro; 10-20-2011, 11:52 AM."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj
