2) If this were an old block / rare head combo I wouldn't advise you to have them shaved , I'd tell you to get higher comp pistons. But this being a 5€ "new" block I don't see the harm. Note that taking 1 mm off the block has greater impact on compression than taking the same amount off the head. Plus by shaving the block you can control how much the pistons go over the top. I'm aiming for 0,8mm piston-head clearance. This is the safe minimum for M10 , and gives tight enough squish area (which I understand it also needs to really burn properly). That 1,8 piston & head only has "squish band" area on one side of the combustion chamber anyway..
I'm not sure what you meant by that comment about springs and rockers. Shcrick valve springs are ~150€ a set right? As for rockers , OEM ones will go to a bit over 7000rpm if everything else is right. I've seen fairly cheap, expensive, and very expensive rockers that don't work/destroy the cam lobes and wear out. I know of only one set/manufacturer that absolutely works , but they're so pricy that I won't even dream about them. Would be nice to rev an M10 to 8000 though :)
For my engine , I'm thinking of getting that 292+springs , and I'm going to use stock rockers with custom eccentrics (that have big enough adjustment and are tight to the rocker "fork", not to cause additional stress / tension to it). Rev limiters to 7000 & 7100 and fingers crossed :)Last edited by petrolhead; 12-21-2011, 09:26 AM.Comment

@M42Technik: Thanks
@FredK: Thanks, I love my interior too! One of the better upgrades i've done.
@Petrolhead: Thanks again for a lot of usefull information! What I meant to say with the comment regarding the rockers was that I'm not going to mount used rockers on a $350 camshaft ;) cheapest set of OEM rockers I´ve found around here were about $300. Add the set of springs and your camshaft is beginning to get a bit more expensive :psigpicComment

I've seen used OEM rockers used on many engines with $$ poured into them. No problem if they're not worn (no marks on the "hard bit" etc).@Petrolhead: Thanks again for a lot of usefull information! They are not worn, just some little marks from the camshaft. A friend told me there is no problem in reusing them if they are going on the same cam. But he wouldn't mount them on a new cam because you're probably going to wear the cam a lot faster then.sigpicComment

OT , sorry but I can't resist :D There will be a "euro" E30 meet next May. Check it out here :D 53 cars last year , hoping to do better in 2012.

Long time since i posted here, lets kick this thread back up! There definitely is some progress on the car.
MT1 steering wheel:

MT1 spoiler:

And i bought something i could resist once again:

It's an rebuild 1.8L M10 which i could get extremely cheap.
- Rebuild head:
- Head milled down 0,3 mm
- "Flowed" the intake ports to match the intake manifold
- New valves
- New driveshaft bearings
- New waterpump
- Replaced everything in the ignition system
It had run for less then 5000 miles after the rebuild and the price was way less then building my own M10.

Engine removal time: (dad owns gardening company so no engine hoist needed )
Swapping stuff over:

New engine in:

I drove around town for a while and everything went fine so i took it for a few laps around the Nürburgring

Which was extremely fun!

Then not much happened for a while, just driving and enjoying my car.
I decided to have it dyno tuned for the last bit of performance gains and also a bit of peace of mind for the upcoming holiday roadtrip. So the evening before my dyno run my radiator decided to break
Luckely a friend had an old one so i ended up driving around europe with this old thing as a radiator (later replaced with a new one):

Dynorun movie:
I won a grand total of 6 HP on that day, not much but apparantly my tune wasn't that bad! so now I'm at 119Hp @5800 rpm and 165Nm @ 4300 rpm, not bad for an 316 :) (about 30% gain)
2 days later we left for our roadtrip through Belgium, Luxembourg and France.

Found some pop out windows on a French scrapyard, so out with the old:

In with the older:

Much better now (no AC), although 40C/103F trafficjams are no fun:

Very French pic:

Also went to Bimmerfest Europe, so cleaning time:

I also participated in their "handling course", sort of an autox track but very small:

Another meet:

The carburettors always draw attention:

If you made it till here: congrats, it was quitte a big update
But now you're up to speed about my e30. I will be making some more frequent updates in the future but it's in storage for the winter :up:sigpicComment
