How to remove, install or convert to pop out windows

Could be better, could be worse.

I replaced the rear vent gaskets and still noticed a tiny bit of water entering on the passenger side after it rained, this drove me nuts as I knew the new gasket was not seating flush to the opening. It rains a lot in Vancouver so I have to fix this problem, otherwise I'm going to drive around with a pool of water sloshing around in the back.
Instead of readjusting the gasket and hoping that fixes the problem, I will replace both gaskets with butyl rope. This Proform PF300 is perfect as it comes in nice thin strips.
Removed the rear bumper to access the vent assemblies, removed both of them and cleaned thoroughly.
Used some alcohol to wipe down the edges of the opening, followed that up with some water and when dry I applied a couple of butyl strips which will form the new seal.
Inserted the plastic vent assembly, pushed it into place and the butyl squished around all of the edges making a perfect seal.
Repeated the process for the driver side and I let everything settle for a couple of days, then I water tested each side for 10 minutes with a hose and no water enters into the cabin!

Water is getting by the tail light gaskets so I ordered a pair and installed them. Today it was raining and when I peek into the jack and battery tray areas there was water pooled up there again!
I can see where the water trickled in so there has got to be something wrong with both lower sections of the tail light opening preventing the gasket from sealing. What is puzzling is there is no evidence of an accident or damage to the rear of the car, so I can only assume that both tail lights must have been leaking since the car left the assembly line! :(
If I can't massage the sheet metal to help get a better gasket seal, then the next step is to lay down some strip caulk and see if that keeps the water out.

Took advantage of the sunny day we had to go inspect the tail light gaskets and how they are sealing. Looking from the inside of the car the gasket does seem to be forming a very nice seal as I could feel the squashed foam. While examining the tail light I found a tiny pool of water on the trunk floor which could not have leaked in from the tail lights as it too far inward, when I lifted up the piece of foam sound deadening that was touching the pool the water trickled right into the jack cubby floor.
I decided to install the new hatch gasket I ordered last year (part 51718134821) as it is the only factory gasket I have not changed.
Didn't take any pics of the tedious install, reinstall and 3rd reinstall since my OCD had to get the ends to meet up perfectly. Once the new gasket was in place I closed the hatch and VOILA!! The hatch would not close.
Pushed the hatch down hard and it would just bounce off the latch, this proves the old gasket was flattened quite a bit. I adjusted the catch outwards (~2mm) so it would connect with the latch, now I wait for the next rainy day to see if any water gets inside.

Did it fix the leak?
Do you know anything about wagon pop out rear windows? While searching for more info on them your thread popped up.
Anyway, I might be crazy, but I am strongly considering selling the 90 I picked up last year and buying an ix touring while I am over in Europe this summer/fall. I am trying to figure out the logistics of it all.Originally posted by SonnyI am a meme for our community.

AFAIK the touring never came with rear pop out windows and the ones shown in your picture look like the rear windows from a coupe that have been retrofitted in. I do like how they look on that touring.

That would be seriously frustrating. You aren't alone though. I have a mystery sometimes happens/most of the times doesn't leak in the trunk of my E30.
I like the way they look too. I wonder what the dimensions are of the touring rear window vs the coupes.Originally posted by SonnyI am a meme for our community.
