My E30 S50 swap + progress (updates pg. 7)

FIRSTLY: sorry for the low quality of the video! My friend rode shotgun and recorded. and obviously a camera phone's microphone can't handle the tones coming from the exhaust so it sounds like it's going to explode. The exhaust sounds 1000x cleaner than this video shows.
Took the E30 to practice drift/time attack night at a local small track (Adams Motorsport Park). What a blast! She did extremely well, especially considering she had so so tires (Falken Azeni RT615's) and street pads (they faded 2-3 laps in so I had to take it easy and not push it hard.)
I got about 20 laps in so it was very fun. Only trouble happened when the brakes just wanted to give out in the 2nd and 3rd session. I could've ran a 4th but didn't want to risk it.
About the handling: WOW. Holy shot. No suspension slop, no body roll, NOTHING. the cornering is flat and completely ON RAILS. The responsiveness is just jaw dropping. What a f@#king fantastic handling car. And it has so much power that it just rips through the straights.
Luckily the gearing was just perfect and I never had to shift out of second. Unfortunately 90% of my attentio. was drawn to the brakes and the extremely early braking I had to do.
Other than that, I am blown away. Much like a Miata or S2000, this car just rips through the corners with extreme balance and speed. I cannot even imagine how incredible it'd be with some Hankook RS-3's and some GOOD track brake pads. I'm going to work on making that all happen.
Next stop: Buttonwillow and Chuckawalla! -
We've done cars for people who bought while we built and honestly they probably got into them for way less than what either of us had into our personal carsLeave a comment:

Congrats on the purchase. It looks like you really found the right e30 for you. I'm glad I could help you along the way.Leave a comment:

Congrats, clean car. The rear speakers are on backwards.
I own both a KW SC S2000 and an E30 and they are both fun cars.

Thanks man! And yeah, I don't really care about the "built not bought" bullshit, I am basically just taking on someone else's project and using it as a foundation for my own goals. Castro Motorsports did EVERYTHING on this car (suspension, exhaust, swap, everything) and there's nothing shameful about that.
I have already built cars from scratch (my S2000) and it is satisfying, but no more satisfying than improving upon someone else's tasteful project. Plus, it's really nobody's business whether or not you bought the car with work already done to it. It's a mantra that reeks of insecurity and overcompensation.
Oh, and I'll be taking more pics of the rest of the car tomorrow after washing it and putting 'em in this thread if anyone cares. :)[/quote]
Great car and its nice to hear your happy about owning it but bolting parts on a production chassis is not building a car from "scratch".I started out doing the bolt on thing many years ago but have switched to starting with an idea and some tubing.
Much different to have to fabricate every single piece than to pick which part you want to bolt on.
Now I'd like to see some video,0-100 runs will be fine.:)Leave a comment:

You got some hairy legs... ;)
Looks like a party, this thing definitely looks Sean, and I'm sure it's a pleasure to drive. That interior looks spotless, and will definitely ad enjoyment value to the car. Congrats :up:Leave a comment:

Thanks everyone. Only had the car two days and my enjoyment factor is through the roof. Driven 200~ miles on it and spent about $40 in gas... I just can't get enough of the WOT and high-speed cornering hijinks. Tomorrow I'll be taking it for practice night at Adams Motorsport Park for some track time and to learn this particular car's behavior on tight corners. :D
Oh yeah, tonight I raced my cousin's untuned AP1 (full bolt-ons, no soft top, Mugen hardtop, wheels, suspension etc) while I had half a tank of gas + 150 lb passenger. We are about equal drivers. From a 1st gear, 20 mph roll I pulled about 4-5 cars on him by the time we hit 100, even with the passenger. :) I'd estimate without the passenger I'd have 6-7 cars on 'em. I think he was running with only 2-3 gallons of gas too. For reference, his S2000 at this stage is pulling 1-2 cars on stock Evo X's and STI's. On a good track, I'd estimate him to be trapping a solid 102-103 mph. (Stock S2000 @ good drag strips trap 100+ bone stock).
(I think he's pining for an E30 S50/S52 swap now, haha) :)Leave a comment:

Yes but his car had a turbo in your face with a bunch of shiny stuff.
You're exactly right. It would be pretty shocking if a cop ever gave you trouble even if he did pop the hood. I drove my S50 swapped car for over 4 years with no issue.I don't think a police officer would even recognize that it is not the stock engine unless they're into E30's. It looks completely factory under the hood. I will ask my cousin or her husband, they are both police officers where I live.
I think as long as I don't drive like a jackass, any cop is going to think it's some old Bimmer with an exhaust. :DLeave a comment:

Yup, definitely Will's car. Congratulations, that car is a gem. I saw it go from clapped out poorly turboed M20 to it's current glory. A lot of love was put into that car, Will was so happy when it was running. Enjoy it!Leave a comment:

Agreed. Best shifter ever. This E30 has a short shift kit on it but it's just not the same. Nothing truly matches that S2000 shifter. :(
Alright, haha. It needs the rear fender redone, front fender redone, and a hood repaint (hell, whole car repaint) but the interior is 98% mint and it's got a 350 in it. It's a '67 Camaro RalliSport.Leave a comment:
