All weather floor mats and ZHP knob

Here's the old K&N filter versus a plain jane paper filter. Which has more filter media... hmm.

Ready for surgery

Vanity cover off

Not gonna lie, this is not a sight I'm used to. This is the first car I've bought that had zero leaks.

Leveling it out to drain the oil. Not enough room for a jackstand so a wheel is a better safety precaution than nothing.

I happened to already have a 36 from doing E30 wheel bearings

Reverse thread!

Got it off

Helical splines

Intake piston out

Bearings

Outer washer--this is what the rattle kit replaces

Everything (do NOT use normal size vice grips if you do this, even with lots of padding they marred up the surface of the piston and I had to shave it down with a dremel. If I did it right the seal should not be compromised but if I missed a spot it will score the bore of the vanos and I'll basically need a new unit after awhile. Use a vice or possibly larger vice grips, the "medium sized" grips are too small to grip the piston properly)

Unfortunately we ran out of time and need a few more parts, so we called it a night at about 9PM. Not the most flattering pic, lol

Awesome shop spring compressor

All buttoned up

WTF BMW... why do you make me tear your insulation?

Old and new

Konis on and ready to go, car is completely transformed.

Oil change (leveling the car out)

Glad I had this 36 from before

Old water pump out... I think this was original, although the rest of the cooling system is new.

Stewart pump and URO metal pulley. Yeah it's overkill but I don't want to worry about it.

God damn it BMW.

Luckily I had spares

No pic of after. Replaced pulleys, belts and bled coolant.paint sucksComment

Metric Mechanic built 3.15LSD with 3 clutches and 30 degree ramps.

Old seals out

New seal

New seal in. Did not replace the spring clips which turned out to be a mistake. This side does not hold the axle stub in. Still need to tear it apart again and replace that stupid clip.

Exhaust and heat shield out

E sockets for the input and output shaft bolts

Separating the driveshaft was weird. Didn't budge prying against the crossmember/brace, had to remove crossmember and pry against the input flange.

2.93 ready to come out

Diff out

2.93 out and 3.15 on the ground

Rear UUC sway vs. stock

Diff and rear sway in, this was a pain in the pitch dark with no light

Front sway in (next day)
