Did the PO give you a signed title & the lien sale papers? I gather the car was never in his name - so he pulled a "pass thru" on a out of state car.

In the eyes of the DMV it is going to look like you bought the car out of state. I really hope you have a signed title - otherwise your going to have to recreate a paper trail (with sig's of PO or the person who did the lien sale) showing the car ended up yours. It can be a hassle but don't let the DMV get you down - it's always the case that at 2 different windows, you will get two different answers from them - smile - lot's of yes mam's - they LOVE to be in control - but in the end, you have a Mtech cabrio!!
    Good Luck!

Yea, I went through the same shit when I bought an E24 as a parts car and tried to get a junk slip for it... It was a PITA but I know how to get through it.
I didn't get a signed title or the lein sale papers, there was nothing but a bill of sale between me and the other guy. Hopefully I can sweet talk them tomorrow and get through this without too much hastle...

Before you go to the DMV window, have forms 262, 227 & 256 filled out . You & PO sign 262 & 227. You sign 256, use section J only "statement of facts". Forms are available on www.dmv.ca.gov

262 is the DMV's form that is used to record the sale, from PO to you. Fill this out complete with sig's, driver lic. #'s etc. Power of attorney is at the bottom - he prints & signs - put your name in the "assigns" space.

227 is their form for lost title AND transfer of ownership to you. Fill this out completely & check "lost title".

256 (use only section J, "statement of facts" - on back) state " I bought the car with a bill of sale. The title was lost by the seller".

Present these 3 forms + your bill of sale from him + your smog & be silent. It is not advisable or necessary to bring up the out of state lein sale - in the eyes of the DMV this may be a grey area & they will want to heap red tape on it.

If by chance they ask you for additional sig's at the window - your set to sign for him as you have his power of attorney on the 262. You have everything that they will need for the transfer & can get it all done in one visit.

Nope---was raised in PHX but have lived in SO CA for a long time. My friend
picked the moniker many years ago. It is a great city, especially this month with all the eye candy in town for the mega-auctions! I can remember when the BJ was the only game in town, just 2 days, 300 cars & the 2 auctioneers were Rick Cole & Dean Kruse - no admission $$, you could just walk around all those spectacular cars - this year it's a total of 5 auctions Jan. 14 - 29,
1400+ cars & 33 hours of coverage on the Speed channel.
