Some cool night shots

pics came out kinda grainy though, whats up with that? compression?

No, I dont really know what I'm doing wrong but all the night/darker shots I've done are coming out grainy. I'm usually running it on dumby/have the camera meter for you mode (havent gotten the hang of full manual on it yet) so that may have something to do with it. But today I was using shutter priority to get the longer exposures.

TJ you have any ideas/suggestions? None of these pictures have been touched with Photoshop which would help a bit but you can't eliminate grain by any means at all.

Maybe because I'm not shooting in RAW? I'm on the largest file size before RAW but our photo teacher hasnt messed with raw yet so we just keep it on L. I'll put it on raw and try tomorrow..

RAW won't help with grain at all, its not really worth shooting in RAW if you only have 512mb cards.

Lower your iso, and decrease your shutter speed. You might want to adjust the aperture as well but the iso and shutter will be enough to keep you occupied. Photoshop will actually make grain worse if you any sharpening.

It was definitely my ISO setting. I went out and shot (at night just our house light on to supply light) w/a 400 iso and 1/4 second shutter speed and there is no grain..thanks again man :)

What was the iso before? I figured it was 400 in those shots, you should be using 200 or 100 for still night shots.

I was running 1600 because I did a few handheld shots at dusk and didn't want a super low shutter and then forgot to switch over when I used the tripod. Oh well, I know what to do in the future now :)

Wow, most Canon DSLR's image quality really falls off past iso 400... 1600 what definately your problem.

amen brother. my theory is so. ahem... always use the lowest possible ISO level. ONLY in extreeme cases should one go any higher than 400. I wish my Nikon went as far as the Canon does, but hey its all gravy baby. D200, watch out now!

Yeah I've learned my lesson with the higher ISO's, from now on I'm rockin the tripod wherever I go to go as low as possible. I want to get out again tonight and try and get some more pictures.

Keep in mind (as a general rule) you want to be able to see all of the car in car photography. The way you cut most of the car out in some of the pictures was ackward.

The only reasons I did that was because sometimes I timed it wrong and the lights would be like in half of the picture so I'd crop out the section that didn't have any. And the pictures where you can see the church were taken by my friend that was with me soooo :D
