    Picked up a 1971 1802

I've always wanted to come across a "Barn Find". A buddy of mine new I was into BMW's and called me up and said "dude, Ive got this old BMW out at my farm. my parents want it gone". "You come with a trailer and it's Yours".

And so I did just that, got out there, it's a 1971 1802. She's in hurting shape but I think I can slowly bring her back to live. Only has 75,000 original Kilometers. I've done a search around, and can't seem to find any of these around. It's vin number is also only 7 digits long. When I run the vin it comes up as an e28 or e34 530 for some reason. Yet when I run the vin with my Provincial insurance company SGI, it comes back as 71' 02 series 2 door.

Here's some pictures. There is quite a bit of rust in the rocker panels and a bit in the rear quarters, but I've found a place to get rockers panels and I'll eventually fix the rear quarters myself. The interior of the car is also completely shot and will mostly need replacing.

That's pretty sweet. It looks like a lot of work, but with enough time and effort anything is possible. I wish I had a friend that just gave away cool cars.

That thing is crispy. This is my advice. Get it running and safe. Dont put any money into the body.. Drive it for a while and if you decide you really like it get a cheap late model shell out of Calif that cant pass smog ... That shell you have there will bleed you dry trying to make it nice. Unless you want to just practice your welding skills theres something to that too but youre going to find a ton more rust underneath everything

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

Check front sub-frame and rear shock towers, if they're toast it may not be worth fixing. Nice find though.

This little 02 won't be the first Bimmer I've saved. I've already sourced out rocker panels which are deffinately toast. The shock towers are fine. no rust on the sub frames, but. The driver-side front frame rail is actually peeling away from the bottom of the car. It looks as if it were bonded to the chassis. It will be some work but I can fix it.

As of now I am just sitting on it tarped at a friends farm. I will not be able to actually touch the car to much until I have my own place in a year or two.

I did take the battery out of my e39 this weekend and went out to the 1802. Tossed it in.checked the oil and added alot of premixed coolant I had l kicking around the garage. SHE FIRED! gear box feels bone dry, But I drove it about 35 feet. Not bad for a car that hasn't ran since 2001.
