So the Uberkaro is an unusual fabric to have? I wonder how it came to have it when it wasn't in the options list in 1988.
Yes it's a puzzle. Your VIN options list has one of 2 correct codes for 1990 uberkaro (0304 anthracite). So it came with a 1990 fabric option 2 years early... Something special there for sure..
You mentioned that original owner had the power top retrofitted.. Did some more digging on that and I *did* find a power top installation doc so clearly there was a retrofit kit sold by BMW at some point:
The instructions even show the standard power top switch that's on your car so that fits. I hope you are beginning to appreciate the rare combination of goodies in your car :-)
Im not necessarily keeping it as a collectors car, im just only going to use it in summer, not put too many miles on it and keep it in perfect condition. Besides im not keen on seat covers, ive not seen many that look good.
Definitely understand. Certainly don't mean to make you uncomfortable, but I'd hate to see you spill a cup of coffee on those seats :-) *nobody* makes that silver uberkaro cloth anymore. you can find tan and charcoal, but not the silver used in M3s and Cabrios.
Maybe in fact your seats are charcoal/anthracite plaid - the color code certainly suggests that. You have black seat backs and sides, while the M3s with silver uberkaro had silver backs and sides. you can see for yourself when you compare your interior to the M3 pics I posted earlier. It's possible the seats have faded. If you ever pull the seat back off the front seats you can confirm the original color that way.
EDIT: here's the two seats side by side, and the code chart. The pic of the M3 seat appears too bright to me - the sample for silver is darker.
If at any point you change your mind about protecting the seats, I'm certain you could pick up a very comfortable set of seats locally at a reasonable price. "SSkoda" on the forum here posts regularly about E30s he's parting out. Some of them have excellent interiors..
Oh and one more suggestion - pull up the rear seat lower - just yank up hard from behind the driver and passenger seat. flip it over look for the build sheet. It should be glued to the bottom. If it's there it will have the last 7 of your VIN and your vehicle options list. If the VIN matches and 0304 is listed, then those seats are original to your car.
