Ended up taking my girl 14 hours to drive about 20 miles home. Got in at 3 AM.

Let's not let this thread degrade to the point of the Jalopnik comments section of their article on it - full of smug notherners poking fun at the dire and very serious situation our neighbors to the south are dealing with.

People seem to be missing and leaving out the most important part of the story. Somewhere around 130-2pm the schools and work places realized they should have canceled for the day.

So basically the whole city of Atlanta and surrounding area was told "Your kid is being let out early. Come get them now." and "We are closing early it is going to be bad."

What happens in your city, bad weather or now, when everyone is told to drive home now? Add in snow and ice. Do the math.

And no I wasn't stuck. My 15min commute took 1hr15min. I was just having fun. It was mostly snow at that point. Which in the E30 was a lot of fun. Wife in X5 took 5hr20min. People running lights. Blocking intersections. Not yielding. All the rules of the road are eliminated it seems when everyone gets out at once.

A similar thing happened here in '03. They predicted a dusting and we got 7", with everyone trying to get home and/or pick up their kids all at the same time. There was hardly any ice, but my 30 minute commute (at the time) still took me 6 hours. And I was in a 4WD, which is useless if none of the cars around you are moving and/or blocking the roads/shoulders.

Millions in metro Atlanta hunker down to wait out the effects of an ice storm that brought the nation’s ninth-largest city to a screeching halt.

A little snow and it caused all this!

That happens in vegas when it rains. There are accidents every 20 yards and some streets will flood. It gets annoying quickly lol
