New name and and new engine for Mina: an e30 for the GF

Update: The GF became my wife, and the car is now my daily driver.

My girlfriend is a pretty awesome chick. She insists on only driving manual transmission cars. The first time I saw her laptop, her background was some muscle cars. She wants a Datsun 240z, and/or a Mini. She is my navigator for road rally's. She knows a fair bit about cars, and has good taste. Unfortunately, being a broke college student, she has been perpetually relegated to family hand me downs. She drives a manual Honda Civic, which, while its a reliable, pleasant enough, gets you from a to b car, it is hardly inspiring to drive. We have been cohabing for several years, and as a former professional mechanic I have long been responsible for fixing and maintaining her car, and while a Civic isn't hard to work on, it isn't the most rewarding car to spend time busting knuckles on either.
She has long wanted a nicer car, but living in western New York, a Datsun or Mini would be a pretty terrible daily driver, and require a winter beater. And as awesome as she is, she has been, for the longest time, lukewarm at best towards the styling of the e30. She actively protested when I got my 87 325 2 door.

    I don't get it either.

I have long been trying to talk her into an e30. A, they are great cars, that are a blast to drive, while still making a suitable daily driver, and B, I have too much e30 knowledge in my head and spare parts in my garage to have room for another project car. I frequently search the local area Craigslist's for e30's, just to see whats out there, and share interesting finds with my brother. He recently sent me a link to an ad for a black 4 door 87 325i local to him. It looked complete, and relatively clean. It was certainly all original, with red leather comfort interior, 13 button obc, power sunroof, and factory tape deck (including the head cleaning kit). It ran, but according to the ad, needed brakes to pass inspection. I showed the ad to my girlfriend to see what she though. I figured she would scoff, as usual. It was automatic, it was a 4 door, and it was an e30. Instead, she lit up, and asked gleefully "for me!?!"

We took the drive out to check it out right then. I spent a few minutes looking it over, and took it for a spin around the block. We made a deal, and drove the hour and a half back home with plans to go back in the morning with a trailer. I got a buddy with a truck to drive out with me in the morning, and we stopped at u-haul to rent a trailer. When we arrived to pick up the car, the guy came out nervously.

    He lost the title.

I was furious. Who loses a title? Why didn't he call me to let me know? Why did he wait until THEN to check and make sure he had it!?! I angrily told the gentleman to call me if he finds the title, or gets a new one, and I would come back out to get the car, but was going to pay him less. He was apologetic, and agreed to knock money off the agreed on price.

Two weeks later, my friend in I ventured back out, another rented trailer in tow, with the assurance that the title was signed and ready to go. Fortunately, this time, it was, and minutes later, I had the car strapped down to the trailer, happy as could be.

Before I drove off, the gentleman asked if I wanted any of the spare parts he had. I said sure, figuring it would be the usual stuff, like used plug wires, and some random coolant hoses or sensors I wasn't really worried about, but figured I would take anyway. And I was mostly right. A spare afm, a used distributor cap, and wires from an eta engine (no impulse sensor). Then the guy says 'oh yeah, I have a rear body panel from a parts car I had', and pulled a Zender rear apron down from a pile of boxes. Needless to say, I was thrilled.

The car has some issues. It is long overdue for a date with paintless dent repair, and badly needs a full tune up, as well as various interior and exterior trim pieces that are broken or missing. The tires and brakes are trash, and the alignment is comically off. It is definitely getting a 5 speed swap this summer. But considering I got a running e30 in western NY for $1400, I am thrilled with the car.

EDIT: After wrapping on the manual conversion and head replacement, and swapping in my old suspension and wheels, the gf decided that the girls name is Mina, not Black Betty, so her name has changed. Apparently, Mina wasn't happy about it, because after a few hundred miles, she developed some pretty worrisome rod knock. The car is going in a whole new direction...

After getting her home this afternoon, my girlfriend and I spent some time digging in to the car to find out how good (or bad) it was. I knew it was misfiring, and the oil looked terrible (and a little foamy, like it had moisture). I figured the reasonable worst case was a bad head gasket, but I have a rebuilt 885 head, head gasket, and head bolts in my garage ready to go if that was the case. I pulled the plugs, and performed a compression test, and got a solid 140+ across all 6 cylinders, and then put new plugs in. I found the impulse sensor wire was actually broken, and was surprised, as I didn't think it would run without an impulse sensor. I had a spare #6 with sensor that I swapped in, and the idle settled out perfectly. Unfortunately, cylinder #2 has a hard misfire, and pulling the plug or disconnecting the fuel injector wires made no difference. It was too cold by that point to continue, but I am confident that since I have good compression, and strong spark, it has to be an easy enough fix (probably a faulty/clogged injector).
Tomorrow I'm going to swap out the bottlecaps with dry rotted tires it came with for a set of basketweaves, change out the #2 injector, adjust the valves, and flush/change the oil. If I get #2 to fire, I'm going to move on to the timing belt and water pump, while I wait for rotors from UUC's moving sale to show up.

Funny story about the timing belt/water pump: I asked the PO about its maintenance history, and he said he just replaced the water pump. I thought "GREAT! That saves me some immediate work!". I asked, to clarify, if he replaced the timing belt too. He told me he put the old timing belt back on, because it looked fine. I was shocked. A timing belt costs what, $30 from your flaps? Oh well. The radiator is leaking anyway, so I might as well get in there and do it all in one shot.

After getting the car and looking it over, I have identified the major positives and negatives:

    The good:
    crack free dash
relatively rust free (this is the northeast after all, there are some spots here and there, but no rot that I could find)
clean paint (with a few dents that can get popped out, and scratches that can be touched up)
    325i
    well equipped trim
    came with Zender apron
funky cardinal interior with ski pass and rear headrests
    premium sound
    bmw floor mats

    the bad:
    broken antenna
    automatic
    missfire
    automatic
    broken rf window motor
    automatic
missing a few trim pieces here and there
    automatic
    diving boards
    automatic

This car should clean up easily and quickly, and will receive the ST springs and Ronal R7 wheels from my other e30 when it comes back from paint.
Once everything else is sorted out I will swap in a manual transmission. It should make a clean, attractive daily driver that I'm sure my GF is going to love. I know I am looking forward to spending time working on this instead of her stupid Civic.

My wife had a Black Betty for awhile-same car except it was a Super eta with grey vinyl interior. Cardinal/Schwarz is a great combo. Well done-she'll love it.

I spent some time on the car out in this beautiful 23 degree weather chasing down the cause of the hard miss on cylinder number 2, but unfortunately, didn't make any real progress.

I swapped the cylinder 1 and 2 spark plugs. No change.
I swapped the cylinder 2 and 3 injector plugs. No change.
At this point I thought; "well, it must be a faulty injector", so I swapped out the fuel rail and injectors with the pretty rebuilt ones I have waiting for my 2.7i build when my luxor e30 comes back from paint. No change.

              I've got air.
              I've got fuel.
              I've got compression.
              I thought I had spark.
              But still no combustion?

I suspect at this point it must be a weak spark. I have some spare wires, but it got dark before I got to it, and I was just too cold to keep working on it. I might get up early and swap out the cap and wires with spares before work tomorrow, and see if that fixes it.

I had to pull the valve cover off to slip the fuel rail out, and am again worried about the head gasket. The oil isn't foamy, but it looks bad, and much more cream colored than it should. However there didn't appear to be any 'droplets' of coolant under the valve cover. The oil was a consistent color, and performing a block test didn't indicate exhaust in the coolant, but still... that oil. The chance of getting oil/coolant intermix without leaking to the cylinder and failing a block test, not overheating, not showing oil in the coolant, and not leaking seems very unlikely, particularly given the design of the coolant and oil passages in the m20.

I used to work at a car dealership, and cars that only got started to be moved around, but never got up to temperature, and mostly just sat around tended to acquire moisture in the crankcase through condensation, and would end up with crummy looking oil until it got hot enough for the moisture to evaporate.

I didn't take a picture when the valve cover was off, but it didn't look any different from this picture:

The oil has a very slightly milky look to it, but it isn't foamy, so I just don't know what to think.

I guess I need to get the miss figured out and change the oil, and then wait and see if the new oil turns milky looking. If it does, I will accept my fate.

In the meantime, parts should start showing up tomorrow, and I can get started pulling the front of the motor apart to change out the timing belt.

I went out this morning and swapped the distributor cap and wires, and still have a misfire on #2. I am going to adjust the valves when I get home from work in a last ditch effort to get #2 to fire, but at this point I'm assuming the head gasket is leaking into #2, and the only reason it passed the block test was that no combustion is actually happening that would force exhaust gas into the coolant to test for. I'll drain the oil after that, and see just if I am being paranoid or, if there is actually coolant in there. Why I still registered over 140 psi on a compression test is beyond me, but maybe the compression tester is faulty? The only other theory I have (and I've seen this in other engines that weren't e30's) was a worn off cam lobe, causing insufficient valve lift to get enough air in, or exhaust out, for proper combustion. A perma-closed exhaust valve will still show good compression on a tester, since the air never actually leaves the chamber.

I'll know when I adjust the valves. If the cam is worn, or the misfire remains this evening, the head is coming off.

                      I hate when I'm right.

VERY worn cam lobes on cylinder 2. I guess I'm pulling the head.

Too bad it's 38 degrees today, but at least its sunny.

Head out. No signs of leaks on the head gasket. Cylinder bores look good, fortunately.

Block surface looks good as well.

Fortunately, I had this guy waiting on standby. It has already received a valve job, and was shaved/decked, in preparation for a 2.7i build for my luxor e30, but it's going to go into black betty for now. I'll replace the cam in black betty's head and put it in the 2.7i instead.

I didn't get any more interior pictures yet. It's full of odds and ends and parts that still need to get installed. Once it is cleaned out, and all the leather is treated, I will be sure to take some pictures showing it off.

Sorry, no. I love the fact that the back seat has headrests and the ski pass. I already put together a subwoofer/amp/box ready to install. I have a luke box in my other car, and will pick one up for black betty when funds allow.

                              I was busy today:

Block surface and intake manifold all cleaned up:

New water pump and tensioner in place:

Uh oh. Old style stamped idler gear still installed. I ordered a replacement cast gear, but they were backordered 2 weeks. I don't want to wait that long, so I am going to hunt around tomorrow to try and find one quicker.

There was a threat of rain this afternoon, so I went and bought a cheap easy up to protect me from the elements. I have a garage, but it is FULL of parts from my Luxor e30 while its at paint, so I'm stuck doing this outside.

                              And.... drumroll....................

                              The head is on!

I just have to bolt up the manifolds, and change the idler gear so I can put the belt on. A new radiator should arrive tomorrow.

I will try and get the brakes done tomorrow, and probably get started on the radio install. I also need to install the Garagistic instrument cluster gears that showed up today. It is frustrating to know that even if I get everything else done, I won't be able to drive it this weekend because of the idler gear.
