This happened last May 2013, but I couldn't talk about it until now. My daughter (previously the most responsible kid ever born) wore out my beautiful S52 MTech2 ragtop on a jersey rail near the Las Vegas strip. Full Tokyo Drift action; at least the car went out in a suitable fashion. She was not injured, but did as a consequence spend the Summer riding public transportation and walking through gang-infested war zones in 115 degrees to attend classes due to not having a car anymore.
Car took a hit front and rear. Moved the left front shock tower rearward about an inch. Back unibody was slightly bent. Car had a whole lot of very nice parts on it, many of which were casualties of the hit. Damage includes front and rear E36 5-lug pieces and much of the Mtech bodywork.
So I explained to her that economically, not getting injured is key. A really nice E30 won't pay for one day in the hospital. That said, if she had wrecked it in a legitimate mistake, I wouldn't have been so pissed off. But she borrowed something she knew was a treasured possession, and then drove it like a jackass. She wanted to pay for it, make it right etc. but I told her she didn't have the ability to fix it or the funds to replace it. Some screw ups are beyond your ability to make good on.
On balance though, the kid is saving me several $100K's of college expenses through her hard work, so $10K worth of E30 doesn't look so bad in the big picture.
I just bought a 64K 325i ragtop for her little brother to use getting to his college classes (during high school); hopefully he will take better care of this one than his sister did with mine.
