i would never buy my kid a car. People take things for granted when you just hand them things.... I had to buy my first car when i was 16, it was a 1986 honda accord for $1200.. this is when i learned how to wrench..... My parents wouldnt fix it if it broke down, although i was in a high school mechanics class where i could work on it. I always drove it nice and treated it like it was a 20k car... i was paranoid that i would have to spend money on fixing it if i bagged it.

I started with a 1991 Subaru Legacy that didn't run. Best $500 spent as a 16 year old. Learned how to fix things and be responsible.

Anyway, as much as I value the idea of teenagers buying and fixing up their own hoopties, this kid had 40% of the credits for a BS/chemical engineering completed by the time she graduated high school, and earned a merit-based full tuition scholarship from University of Alabama. Providing a car to get the kid to various community college campuses made economic sense. My son is on the same track.

BTW I completely and correctly converted the AC to R134 2 weeks prior to the wreck, including a ginormous aluminum radiator and SPAL fan.

She was not injured, but did as a consequence spend the Summer riding public transportation and walking through gang-infested war zones in 115 degrees to attend classes due to not having a car anymore.

It's painful to see an Mtech 2 in that condition. RIP. As a teenage E30 owner, this is my worst fear. Every time I think about showing off, hooning or other shenanigans, pictures like this go through my head and I drive like a granny.
