Oh god, well if your heatercores leaking I think there's some recall that BMW still fixs if I'm not mistaken. If its not been done you can go over to your local dealer and they'll fix it free of charge. Take pics of the reactions the people at the dealer give you and post them up.

So I found this under the intake:

E302 (1 of 3) by AP Photomatic, on Flickr

Replaced that, buttoned everything up, temp still climbs up into the red at idle, but no steam. Is the overheating just because there's too much air in the system?

      Also, some friends visited:

Ill give it to ya, at least your diving right in. I wouldn't even mess with the body, light sand the rust, clear, done! I could only imagine what the undercarriage looks like. Safety looks to be first to address, other than your coolant leak, and maybe a check on your tetanus vaccine. Have fun with it!

Posted this in the M42 section as well:

Temp gauge went into the red on the way home, stopped to let it cool down a bit, kept driving. Blew the upper heater hose that goes from the firewall to the engine block.

Replaced that, but the car still overheats within about 15 minutes of idling, less when driving it slowly around the block.

There's no heat out of the vents with the heat knob turned all the way up. Fan doesn't seem to blow either when turned all the way up, all vents open, all sliders to the right.

Upper and lower radiator hoses don't feel like there's any pressure in them. Doesn't seem to be leaking anywhere else.

Checked the oil cap and dipstick for milkshake, oil's dirty but otherwise fine. No white smoke out the exhaust.

Car starts up, idles, and drives just fine, I shut it off when the temp gauge climbs past the 3/4 mark.

What are the possible culprits? Busted water pump, busted thermostat, clogged hose somewhere, clogged heater core/valve/radiator? Shitty bleed job?

Lower radiator hose on the driver side also appears to be leaking now.

Car also smells rich on startup.

If you have not properly bled the system I would statrt there. Get the front end high in the air and crack the upper radiator hose and fill from there. Check the thermostat in some hot water to make sure it opens up.

Saw this car on craigslist, $1500 was too much. jesus. I paid $1500 for my 318is Slicktop from boston, that had a low mileage engine and not nearly as much rust.

Pull the carpet, post pics of what ensues. Before you even Diag the overheating.

Sold to someone else the day after, unfortunately. This car was $1500, with new front control arms, new brake rotors and pads all around.
As we say at my job, 'one comp doesn't make a market.' I've sold several near-perfect body cars out here for around $3k within the past couple years. You would have been best served by flying out here and driving one back.

I've parted way nicer cars than this. Take it from someone who's dumped a fuck ton of money in a POS - start with a clean shell. I would part it and move on.

means you have a popped heater core.

im hoping this car was free. bc you will spend 6k to make it safe to drive. if i were u. id part it and get something not from under the sea and driven by a 16 year old girl.
