    R3V, I Think I Found a Rare Gem

Picked up this little gem today. As far as I can tell it's a '92 318i motorsport design edition cabriolet. In neongrun metallic with matching m-tech cloth interior. From what I can find online production of the design edition in this colour and LHD is 250 cars max and may be as few as 50 cars. It needs a fair bit of TLC, but the fact that it exists and that I now own it, I couldn't be happier. If any of the r3v experts know anymore about the design edition I'd love to hear it. Information is pretty hard to come by on it.

They made lots of LHD color edition tourings in green. The rare part is that it's a vert. They made very few verts in color edition. As far as I know they didn't sell them in the states/America's hat at all. They were designed to clear the inventory for the 91-94 tourings and verts.

The design edition cars were Red, Blue, Purple and Green. Purple being the most common. My brother has some green design edition touring cards in his 4door alpine car. I've imported quite a few design card sets from germany. If fact, I have a red set of 4 door design edition cards in my garage right now.

What's interesting is I didn't know they came with green weaves. I assume those are 15" not 14".

Very cool car, can't wait to see more photos.

No they are 14" weaves. It's a Canadian spec car. Even the spare is painted.

As far as I've been able to find the 318i design edition verts only came in neon blue and neon green. With the green being more rare but I really don't know for sure. Do you have links to any sites with some more info on these?

Not on the cabbies. I will talk to my german mate and see what he can find. He has an official BMW production numbers book. He might be a be able to find a original sales brochure for the design vert models. I'm surprised it's canadian spec. That's interesting. Does it have a m42 in it?

There is some interesting info on the Deutsch wiki page for the e30.

          Google Translate.

"For model year 92 the Design Edition was mugellorot by the two additional colors and Daytona violet supplemented and expanded the scope of equipment (ABS, electromotive canopy, M-Technic suspension, ZV) further upgraded.

End 92 there was the final edition of the 318i Design Edition Convertible with further improved equipment (Nappa leather bi-color, heated seats, fog lights, Radio Bavaria C Reverse RDS) mugellorot in 3 colors, Daytona violet and Mauritius blue corresponding to the paint colored seat center sections in mugellorot , daytona violet or tobagoblau."

Much appreciated! That would be very cool to see. I decoded the VIN online and found the colour and interior to be original to the car. Its an m42 ya, and was originally delivered to the Vancouver area as best I can tell

I'll see what I can find for you. It's a rare bird in North America regardless of the number built in the mother land. Great pick up.

I have seen the same neon green cab on Wheeler Dealers or Deals on Wheels. They fixed it up and sold it. The design colors are cool. I really dig the technoviolet.
According to the site (and it's not 100% definitive), your car should have 15x7 silver weaves, shadowline trim and M tech 2 steering wheel + leather handbrake gaitor.

I noticed your car isn't shadowlined and has bodycolored 14" weaves vs silver 15" weaves. It also appears to be federalized (I'm not familiar with Canadian models) with 3rd brakelight, sealed beams, US grills, sidemarkers, etc. Does it have M tech 2 steering wheel? any special trim in the interior? Feel free to post more pics!

It's a Canadian spec version. They are rare here, but they are around.
They are not grey imports, they were delivered new to Canadian dealers. I personally have seen about 9-10 of them in Vancouver.
I have only ever seen the blue and green ones here.

Absolutely! This thing will be a cruiser. Maybe some lowering springs but any modifications I make will be minor and reversible. I already have two highly modified e30's to play around with, no need for another. I'm just going to enjoy this one the way BMW intended!
