The "thing" underneath of the door handle is the factory option alarm, it use a magnetic key (you can flip/roll the magnets to change the combination) and once is connected, it activete the alarm horn if tampered the glass/door and disable the ignition.
In this shot you can see the alarm red dot (led or the like) below the license plate, again factory item.
More cool pics, and great factory items. Love factory options!
Does the vertical aim adjusters for those headlights work? Here in SA 99% of them don't. Mine included.
It used to work as I ordered it new, but after not so long for some some jobs in the front one of my techs looks like accidentaly broke/cracked the plastic tip (90° degree) at the adjuster screw (motor) and it doesn't work any longer. Since is something I really don't use because I never carry people in the back, I don't bother in buying a new set. Plastic houses in the engine bay of this system looks brand new and that's what it matters for me at this point:)
BTW...this is +/- how it looked when I found and bought the car years ago....

Before you posted those before photos, I was about to ask if you just bought the car recently, brand new. It looks as if it just rolled out fresh from the BMW factory.
