    New BMW Owner Here!

    Hi guys,

I just became the owner of my first BMW, a 1987 325E. I picked it up for $1250. The engine runs pretty good and the transmission is in good shape. It does need a lot of little things so it will be a project of mine for the next few months.

It needs all new suspension, new brake lines, the AC recharged, and at some point I'd like to do a vinyl wrap to a different color that will handle the hot Arizona sun better. My goal for the car is to have a nicely restored daily driver. So far all I have done is replace plugs and clean the throttle body and clean some interior switches so they work again. Some of the issues I could use some advice on.

It takes a good 10 seconds of cranking before it will start. I have been told this is due to possibly the transfer fuel pump being dead.

The engine had a broken breather hose when I bought it. I have fabbed up a temporary hose til I get a new one in and now the idle is smooth but the engine idles at 1050-1100 RPM which seems a little high.

There is a little surging under acceleration until you get to 3000 RPM or so.

Any advice would be helpful. I'm really excited about this car. I have always loved old Bimmers and it will be a welcome change from my currently daily, my 500HP '06 Pontiac GTO. It's a little much in traffic. :)

Overall it seems to be in great shape, definitely a solid find for $1250. Congrats on your first BMW, I'm sure it will treat you well!

Thanks for the welcomes, guys! I've got a bunch of things fixed on the car already. I repaired the power windows switches that didn't work, I fixed the A/C switch so the compressor engages now but the button doesn't light up. It stopped starting a week ago and I ended up finding out that all the grounds and positive battery cables connections in the car had to be cleaned up. They weren't even that corroded but it was enough to keep the starter from engaging.

I still have a hard cold start issue. I confirmed the other night that the transfer pump is pumping with the key in START position so I'm not sure what the problem is. It seems like a loss of pressure but I don't know where the anti drainback valve is in the system.

I have new brake lines on order and once those are installed and the brakes bled I should be ready to start driving the car every day.

Brakes are fixed! New braided stainless lines all around and new fluid in the clutch whole system including clutch which was black as the night. I'm going to put insurance on it and start driving it daily. Still a lot of little things that need fixing, but it's a good start.

Sorry I'm I'm making what seem like useless posts. 10 post rule and all... :D
