Why are there tennis balls on the corners of the roof rack?

i used to have extra wide bars on my old 2002. a friend put tennis balls on the ends of the bars during a party one night. he called them 'friend savers.' he had given himself a pretty serious black eye earlier in the week after a couple too many tasty malt beverages while we were golfing. but it wasn't the beer. he just wasn't too smart all around.

cause every once in awhile when i would get out of my car i would hit my head on the bars . They stuck out like 5 inches on each side

A lot of people around here do that on their racks, it's so you don't smack your head onto/into them, but also so you don't smack your snowboard/skis/bike into the ends of them.
