Take a look at my sig. Im riding on Bilstein sports and H+R sport springs. Nice subtle drop, definately not ricey, and the car handles nice and tight (a little too tight for New England roads sometimes).
On the e46/e36/e30 handling question, my roomate has a 04 325xi and it makes my e30 feel like its jet propelled and on rails. My e36 is a balance between both.
xi's suspension is different from zhp. ZHP feels more glued to the ground than both of my E36 M3 did, the only thing i'd change are sway bars and get an LSD for it.
H&R race and bilstein sports on a 318is will still not be as low as a 325is with H&R sports. That's to give you a visual perspective.
I've got the H&R race on my 318is, and if your city has a lot of bumps...I'd go with H&R Sports. The car corners very well and is very responsive with the H&R Race though, can't comment about the sports.
And ufom3, you were just complaining about s50/2 in the other thread, so why are you telling him to throw one in there, why dont you just suggest the s54, since you like it more.
