    I think this shelf came with the car. When I got her she was pretty stock. I have a 86 es (parts car) in the drive way that has a third brake light. Back when I was into water cooled vw's I used to have an 85 golf. 85 was the first year for that body style (mk2) but the only year of that body style without the third brake light. All 86's and up had them. Since both companies seemed to have had them fitted after 85 (86-) it makes me wonder if it was a US regulation type of thing.
