does e36 stock lighting suffer from crappy light output like the e30s?

E36 US lights are horrible, plastic lens and non ellipsoid. TJ is going to notice a night and day difference, one of the best mods for an e36 imo.

E30 ellipsoids are far superior to e36 US stock headlights, same goes for e30 fogs.

How would you compare them, quality-wise especially, to ZKWs?

I have the same exact lights. Although I have never owned a set of zkw's, I will say that they can't be worth the money over these. All of the usual complaints you hear about with the depos have not been a problem with my set. The ajusters are very robust and move with ease. I have yet to have any fogging issues either. I think they are your best bang for your buck.
