Yeah, he posted it on Craigslist. I was lucky, I had been looking for that missing top piece for a month and haven't seen one since. It was going to cost over $500 to get one imported from a junkyard in Germany.

I think I'm a little confused here, I didn't think that the baur was ever offered as a model here in the states, is that correct?

So whats the deal with the baur anyway? It just looks like halfway to a convertible, but it appears to use standard doors like found on a hardtop coupe. Is the chassis more rigid than a convertible? Is there any point in owning one besides the fact that they are very rare here in the states? Am I the only one who thinks its ugly?

You may have missed the part where I said it was imported around the turn of the century. They're pretty common in Europe.

Baur was a company that BMW basically handed cars off to for after-mods. They start life off as e30 coupes and Baur modded them into either full convertibles or half-convertibles (or "top convertible" - what the "TC" stands for).

The back half of the car is a convertible and the top half has a removable roof. So you could ride with both up, either one down, or both down like in the pics.

Once BMW made their own factory convertibles, Baur ceased production of the BMW mods.

They were factory options, just not performed by BMW. You ordered them direct from the dealer this way.

They were never offered in the states, but 7 were officially imported by US BMW dealers and offered as new. All the rest were imported privately later on.

I don't know how you can look at these pics and say the car is fugly, but too each their own.

I don't know about the body being more rigid than a convertible, but I do know that this car is track banned, my brother/mechanic/racer already had some thoughts....

It's damn fast though! My roommate drove it and said it has quicker pick-up than her new mini.

I meant that every single one has been some haggard re-incarnation of what might have been an e30 and some type of convertable abilities. Funny sidemarkers drilled into the sides, Yours is clean and simple, It looks to be the great beginings, and whatever you do to it, keep it simple and oe/euro. Wait, your on r3v posting, Im sure it will stay unmolested and could easily become something amazing.

haha I don't think my roommate wants me posting pics of her in here. :)

She's also about to give the mini back to the dealer and get a Honda Civic SI.

The mini she has is the version with sun and moon roof and there's serious water leakage issues, it's fried all the electronics in her car. She's had almost everything replaced and there's still water leaking in through the trunk somehow. Really a shame, it's a gorgeous car. Piss poor design on the water draining though. There's a drain pipe from the sunroof down the side of the car next to the driver's leg, and immediately next to an entire panel of fuses - with a known issue of the hose seperating and just draining into the foot area. She woke up to over an inch of water in there one morning.

Even more of a shame is her replacing it with a honda civic si. After her jetta issues and then the mini issues, it's soured her on German cars - even though she loves my BMW. Tried to convince her to get one, but she refuses.

                    Ah well.

the more I think about it ..

That car is crazy – looking at a euro-bumper, early-model.. with bottle caps(?) is just something my eyes are not accustomed to.

                        ..and it’s a Baur ?

..and it’s in THAT condition ?

..and it has HOUNDSTOOTH !? ?! ! eleven
                        (interior pics or ban)

                        fuck

I know it's not like a super-money-bags car, but shit - in terms of "something rare" - that fuckin car is something you don't see everyday..

wouldn't recommend taking it very far from the very interesting state of stock delivery that that car appears to be in.

I can take interior pics, but honestly, you won't be that impressed. Except for the rear seat, it's really not in good condition, due to being exposed to rain, leaves and snow for almost a year when the previous owner abandoned it without the top.

I plan to swap the interior to black, unless a driver door panel magically appears. The fabric is worn/torn near the window handle.
