My E30: Track Car in the Making

Been lurking on this site long enough, so here's my intro.

Bought the car a little over a year ago with some major problems. Overheated, wouldn't hold a charge, and the rear suspension had an undiagnosed issue. Quick and dirty story is that most of the issues were easy fixes: a new fan cured the overheating issue, a new alternator battery solved the charging issue and a new subframe solved the rear end isssue.

    Enough talk, onto the pics:

    First track day:

Here's the alignment at "0" on the camber plates. The front tire will actually be closer to flush/under the fender with a bit o' camber added in:

Tire fitment in the rear. Rubs a bit under full compression and/or with a passenger in the back seat, but not too bad for stuffing a 225 r-comp under there. A light rolling should help.

Paint's not too bad for an 18-year-old car. As you can see I'm missing a duct in the front valence. At some point I'll get around to addressing the looks department stuff.

As it sits now, I've basically completed the restoration/reliability stuff:
    Full rear suspension rebuild including:
    Bilstein shocks/HR Sport springs
    GC rear strut mounts
    New subframe, blasted and powdercoated
Powerflex TA bushings, IE subframe bushings
    IE weld-in alignment kit
    New rotors/pads
    SS lines

    Front suspension rebuild including:
    New front control arms/balljoints
    Offset M3 control arm bushings
    New tierod ends
    GC SpecE30 Camber/Caster plates
    New rotors/pads
    SS lines

Other than that, a set of 15x8 slipstreams wearing 225 Yoko AO32 r-tires and some misc. parts here and there. Street wheels are Ronal LS with BF Goodrich G-force Sports.

    Future plans are:
Alignment (just got the car back on the ground over the weekend)
    Roll the fenders
    Strip it bare
Power mods (? not sure what's effective, probably just an intake and a chip)
Install Corbeau seats/rollbar/harness. It'll get a full cage at some point, but for now a rollbar/harness bar will do fine. I'm open to recommendations on that point, as I haven't really researched it thus far.

Nice, whats the specs on the wheels and what size tire? Also, looks like the rear toe is out, might just be the angle of the pictures.

              Looking good dude.

Didn't you used to have an alpine white car? Or did you have that car when I bought the K1s?

The wheels are 15x8, ET 20 I believe. About 14.8 lbs. each. I'm very happy with the fitment - they're pretty much centered in the wheel well, so you have as much space inside as you do outside. Tires I'll have to check on, but I believe they're 225/50/15.

DEVO - I still have the white 318, though I'm goingto sell it. This car's taking most of my time at the moment, and I really have no need for three cars.

Thanks for the replies everybody. Feels good to have the car back together and on the ground!

Sharp. How many miles are on it? It looks great in the photos.

Send me the details on the 318 when you get a chance, I don't want another car either but I may have someone who would want an E30, not any time soon though.

Some day I'll see you on the track.

TRUE!! The car needs some love on the front end. My ultimate goal is Mtech front and rear bumpers (knockoffs, probably, as I can't justify spending the money on stuff that will probably get destroyed at some point) and the ever-infamous Taurus sideskirts.

I think it has about 195K miles on it...not bad and it still runs strong.

Will do. It's a mechanically solid car, few bumps and bruises and some "typical" old car stuff that would make it an excellent track car and/or M50 swap candidate. Engine's strong, transmission is strong, but will need a new clutch fairly soon. I posted a FS ad here, but probably won't get serious about selling it until after the new year. Looking for 1700 for it.

And yes, track day is a must! It's what these cars were made for, IMO.

Looks great. Nice start. Be aware that track e30s need as much front camber as possible. So, forget that "0" and push the top of the shcks inward. Zero front toe or barely open for stability when braking is good too. I also prefer zero rear toe. If you want to lower the car without getting excessive rear camber and toe), then you can raise the subframe by 12mm, and shim the diff by the same amount. Usually works nicely with either stiff urethane mounts or solid ones.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.
