Annnnd so of course, no job is a small job. I pulled the exhaust off my car on Sat night to change the guibo and in the process, discovered that my CSB and tranny mounts are all shot. I'm gonna bet mucho dinero that my universal joints are seized... the CSB is torn completely apart!

Called Portland Driveline and ordered a remanufactured driveshaft with serviceable u-joints for $408 with a $75 core charge...not bad. Seemed like nice guys over the phone.

Car's in the shop now...I figure while it's in I'll have them throw on my new Treehouse CAB's, control arms, Bilstein Sports, H&R's, and have them align the car to M3 spec.

...the joys of owning a 24 yr old car.

Updated in the past two weeks, for those who care...
          • new remanufactured driveshaft from Portland Driveline with serviceable u-joints
          • center support bearing
          • guibo (LOL...if you saw my old one you'd laugh SO hard...)
          • tranny mounts
          • Treehouse Racing control arm bushings
          • Lemforder control arms
          • H&R Sport springs
          • Bilstein Sport struts/shocks
          • new stock front strut bearings
          • Aluminum heavy-duty rear shock mounts (with replaceable cores)
          • Falken ZE-912 tires
          • alignment to M3 specifications
          • brake light switch
          • Alpine CDA-9883 head unit with hardwire input for iPod
          • 4 new Alpine SPS-13C2 5-1/4" 2-way speakers
So far I really like the ride, although it's fairly harsh...but certainly an improvement over my completely blown front struts and tired springs from before. The car totally corners on a dime... it's fun being able to take a corner sharper than I normally would at a faster speed than I usually would. The tires are grippy and quiet on the highway and the car feels really stable at high speeds.

The new tires, suspension, driveline components, and tranny mounts make the car feel basically like it's new...no vibrations - I'm very pleased. And the tunes from the Alpine and speakers is favorable... get a little bit of bass reverb from the speakers so I'll probably get a sub eventually, but for now it's way better than stock.

Why are you depressed? Just drive it enjoy it for the next 5-7 years and sell it then.

M50 with E30 is an almost maintance free car except for the basic things. Fluid and filter changes.

haha... I'm depressed already. My new little toy/daily driver has cost me $3700 in repairs in the past month. But...I mean, it also needed a lot of maintenance that was ignored for years. I looked through records that came with the car last night and saw that mechanics had told the previous owner about the blown guibo and control arms as early as 1999, when the car had 150K miles... and now, here we are, 9 years and 40K miles later and the car FINALLY has been fixed.

I suppose I should feel righteous

Once I get my rear new pads and rotors on (so the car's brake sensor stops SCREECHING at me everytime I do more than a grandma-style stop..) it will feel better, but yeah... the new stuff has really made a substantial improvement in ride quality.

That's alot of money you have sank into it. And it's still an e. Might want to resist urge to mod for a few months to recover funds.

haha... well yeah, duh... the only mods I did were the spring/shocks/shock mounts/control arm bushings. everything else was something stock that was broken or excessively worn.

the fact that it's an eta doesn't bother me at all, to be honest. it kinda drove me nuts having the high whine of the m20b25 in my '90 all the time... it sounded frantic. I know it's the sound of performance and yeah, the car was a ton of fun to drive, but the eta just sounds a lot calmer and fits my budget for gas a lot more.

i think of it as, the eta's the seasoned pro and the 325i was the rambunctious kid. I guess I outgrew the 325i. would I get another one someday as a toy, though? Hell yeah....or an '88m5.... or a shark M6... haha

Your car is lovely. All she needs is Euro bumpers.

those would be hot... it would also look pretty nice with blacked-out chrome trim/mouldings and a subtle tint on the windows.
