Thought I'd introduce by posting some pics of the car I just bought to replace my 2000 323ci 5spd. She's a 91 318is with original vinyl interior. Interior is pretty mint. Exterior is ok, she's missing the IS lip and it's had a cheap respray but it will definitely get the job done for a nice daily. Everything works on it (which is a huuuuuge plus in my book), including the factory BMW alarm system w/ keyless. I am the 3rd owner of the car and it has most of it's service history with it. Even has the original owner's manual, radio, and alarm instruction manual in the glovebox. This is my 5th BMW now and I've loved them all, even my cherry '83 528e.
Picked it up for a mere $1300 due to a blown head gasket. Rather than wasting time and seeing how bad the damage was I just bought another m42 with only 20,000 miles on it (it's a documented BMW installed rebuild/reman). Got it with trans for $1100. Trans came with short shift kit, don't know which, and the motor came with reground cams to schrick specs. I have all the paperwork on the cams and install. I know the car it was in drove great when I test drove it before buying the motor and trans. New motor went in last weekend so I've already popped or motor removal cherry. Other than the motor she doesn't need a whole lot... control arms & bushings, and new shocks are the only thing I can think of. It should be an excellent daily driver.
I already bought a set of euro smilies, euro grilles, and a few other goodies, thanks euro3. Future plans include H&R springs, Billy sports, rear toe/camber kit, and some keskin wheels. More plans that that actually, just can't remember off the top of my head. I'm installing a custom stereo (I do mobile audio and lighting on the side) as soon as she's running well. I have some pics of the motor swap and other various things if you guys would like me to post. Didn't know if interest in a lowly m42 would be that high ;) This is my first e30 so if you have any advice/suggestions please share. I've been lurking here for a couple of months now and this seems like a huge source of info for e30's.
Here she is after her first wash, wax, & full detail job. Took my wife and I about 7 hours.

Yes those mats will be replaced ASAP :)

This is the car it replaced. 2000 323ci 5spd with 160,000 miles on it. Why sell it you ask? Well, the wife bought a brand new Mazda CX7 which carries a huge payment of course. Soooooo I got tired of having a mortgage and 2 car payments. Plus I got $10000 for the 323ci so I was happy too.
