why no HDR?

because newbies to HDR make everything "glow", and they think its sweet. me, it hurts my eyes to look at. ive done my fair share, and not to toot my own horn. but i've finally figured out how to do it, and most people would never guess.

heres an example of what i mean.






notice there is no "glow"? if you are using photomatix. when you go to tonemap the images. increase the blacks and whites a bit, and lower the gamma. you will lose some detail, its inevitable. but in doing so, you will gaim much more in the aspect of realism.

just a tip. take it how you like. i just am sick to death of "hdr's" that make shit look like cartoons.

That is just one of those photos that make people who use HDR as a tool mad. That shot could have been properly exposed in ONE single exposure. Instead someone made it look like a cartoon in photoshop with HDR. And the worst part... it supposedly is white.

Yeah, a buddy took these shots of the M5 and this was his first attempt at an HDR. Wasn't familiar with it, at the time....Still not entirely understanding it. :D

Those trees are actually pretty far away.

HDR does not mean "cartoon like vivid details". That is just taking HDR to the extreme.


THIS shot is also an 'HDR' from 3 images. No other way to get all the shadow/highlight detail with a single shot with the lighting and being behind a tall building. No one would say "OMG NICE HDR" ;)

you don't have to do bracketing, you can do it yourself. just use a tripod then take your 3 bracket shots, then if you're using tv then go 3 stops higher or lower(depending what you need more of) then do another bracket.

Another method of HDR is, well I guess its not "true" HDR, but you can shoot in RAW then manually adjust the exposures and then either use Photomatix(great program) or photoshop or any other program you might use.

The true method will yield cleaner and better results, but shooting just one RAW image is faster, and if it's only for web it's even less noticable

i shoot in raw, and i dont use that bracketing crap. i manually adjust the exposure, and take 7 shots of everything i want to HDR. then i only use the ones that work. once you do it alot, you realize which ones are gonna work, and which ones arent.

Correct.

You may find that -2/-1/0/+1/+2 doesn't yield best results. It may be a combination of the 5 or you may only use 2 or add in another. It just takes practice.

If you really want to shoot amazing HDRs you will need a tripod and patience. As said here he shoots 7 shots of everything in RAW and then heads home to start working on it. It just takes time to do it right.
