That took longer than expected, and it didn't come out as I had originally hoped. Today I pulled the trigger on an '86 eta with a 5 speed. I got it this morning at 8:30, and it started raining at about 10:00, so I didn't get much done. The plan is to switch the engine and tranny into the red car, then get an i head and a 272 cam and get higher compression, maybe bigger pistons down the road.
SO, after the engine and transmission are in and the car is running, I'll throw some money out for suspension parts. I have a Cabrio sway bar on its way to my front door right now.
I will be getting pics of the engine/tranny swap, so stay tuned.sigpic<< wrecked

What are you going to do for engine management? You do realize that there is more to it than just swapping heads right? You need the intake manifold, fuel injection system etc...sigpic<< wrecked

It's been a while since I updated this thread and I've made a tiny bit of progress since then. Here it is:
I did an engine swap, talk about lamesauce putting an eta into an i car... :( Anyways, here's my six step writeup for an engine swap.
1. Connect hoist to engine.
2. Start raising engine.
3. Repeat.
at some point it should be out. Set it to the side somewhere. Start the day over then...
4. Get the other engine out of the other car.
5. Put that engine in the original car. Have your small friend make you laugh.
6. Undo the back half of the automatic drive shaft because you didn't before...
That's all the pictures I have up until now. The car is running, but shittyly. I bought a new CSB a while ago, then lost it, so what I have to do is find it, or buy a new one, install it, DS, install exhaust, then drive the damn thing around my neighborhood, then get it registered. That's my next to do list. I'm already collecting parts for my next little overhaul of the suspension that should happen in October.sigpic<< wrecked

As far as the updates go, I really slacked with updating this thread. Basically, the red car is done. I've got to sell it or the 'vert in the next little while and get rid of the black 325e parts car. It's been picked and I ended up making just over $130 on it. So, uhh, my next project's being hinted at in the m20 section, and maybe I'll try to post updates on that thread better than I did this one.sigpic<< wrecked

here's an update if anyone wants it!
So the car's been kind of sitting, not doing much and I've been hella slacking. The damn thing won't run. The fuel pump doesn't turn on when I turn the key to the on position, so I don't think it's running when the car's cranking. Also, the main relay isn't working properly. I did the fuel injector plug trick to figure out that it's not working. I've used different relays in both spots, but never a brand new one. Would a brand new relay fix this problem? Also, I didn't have spark for a while, then I plugged the sensors in the right way and the car ran when we hot wired both the main relay and the fuel pump relay. But the car didn't stay on, it ran for like two seconds then died. Then it ran again for another two seconds then died right after that. Now it just cranks and cranks and cranks. I would like some input on this matter and I'd like to see this car run next weekend. It's been too damn long.sigpic<< wrecked

Had a similar problem with mine right after I first got it. Never fully diagnosed the starting issue as the head gasket blew but it came down to fuel. When you first turn on the ignition the fuel pump won't "prime" itself like in most other cars. No idea why but it just doesn't. If spark is good I would look at new fuel filter (mine was clogged bad) and completely removing the fuel pulse absorber. My fuel pulse absorber was in a bad way, had 171,000 miles on it, and I think it was probably clogged or something. After I did all that the car seemed to start up a little better but that was with a blown head gasket so it ran like shit. If spark is good and you are getting a reading from the AFM, then fuel is probably your issue. I would recommend splicing in a fuel pressure gauge and jumping the fuel pump relay to pressurize it before you try starting it and give that a go. All this is from my own experiences, hopefully someone else on here can get you some better advice. Good luck to you.
