So, vote time: install motor and tranny at once or motor, then tranny from underneath? Keep in mind I have a lift and tranny jack...

I vote, Engine and tranny on crossmembers from underneath at once. It's much easier that way, but you've already put the steering rack and suspension bits onto the crossmember.

Yeah, I thought about that but it doesn't work so well with a center post lift...

I hate doing the transmission when under the car, I'd rather wrestle with the engine/trans connected from above the car.

I think it's a personal thing?

Ah hadn't noticed that. We have a single post, fork lift kinda setup. Can just squeeze the back of the gearbox past the forks across the car.

Hmm, I've never had a problem with tranny installation but I guess I usually have no choice because it's coming out for a clutch or whathaveyou so the motor stays. All my helpers have voted engine/tranny together too so in it goes tomorrow AM!

Vorshlag competition steering joint. The really expensive way of making your E36 rack fit a pre-airbag car and have tighter steering at the same time.
