New Air Conditioner in a 90 325is

    Picked up a vacuum pump and a gague set today. Also got 2.5 lbs of 134a and shit for an oil change. The other thing - I checked the pressure in both of my AC systems and they are holding charge. It doesn't matter anyways, as I'm still going to replace everything.

    So, I got this vacuum pump - but I have a question. Where does my old r-12 go? Into the atmosphere?

    After I vacuum it all out - is that when I add the 134a - using the vacuum to suck in the charge oil and coolant?

      The best thing is to take it to a shop and have them evac the r12 rather than just letting it out.

        Yeah, I was asking what these other guys are doing with their vacuum pumps. I'm not sure I'm comfotable letting 2.5 lbs of r12 into the atmosphere.

          Yeah, you can have it sucked out by a shop with a proper system.
          I've had techs blow a connection and dump a whole tank of r12. You could get away with it, but.

          I bet a bunch of PnP yards have vented tons of the stuff.

            I'll probably just pay to have it evacuated. eventhough both cars hold a charge I'm still going to start over. they didn't work for some reason.

              So, I was going to start working on the AC this weekend but I had to do my starter, brakes and oil change first. As it turns out, one of my calipers was no good causing one brake pad to wear prematurely. The good news is I only had to do the front pads - the bad news is I had to spend the better part of the day hunting down a reman caliper. So, no other work done.

              Also, my 87 has the freaking green high/low connector. No simple 134a swap there. I'm just going to evac and seal it then charge it with r12.

                So, I'm a little bit unclear. Since my 87 was built before the 134a cutoff so to speak - are the hoses the non-barrier type? To convert to 134a must I replace all hoses with 134a compatible ones?

                  Got the new expansion valve in. The old one was pretty gunked up. The good news is the o rings looked brand new.

                  That job is a pain in the ass though....

                  Also, there was no need to have the car evacuated. There was literally no refrigerant left in it. The leak is on the low side, though.
