I'm sure you already know this, but for the e30 harness you'll have to extend the afm wires quite a bit. IIRC those wires are the only significant extension you need to make. You may have to extend the oil level sender but I never did that on mine so I can't remember.

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread because I'm curious how you're going to do the a/c. 2 e-fans? I want to keep my a/c but I'm not sure there is room in between the condenser and the radiator for a 2nd fan. And I'm not about to notch the subframe to run a clutch fan...

My plan as of now is to replace the stock e30 aux fan with an e34 aux fan which is much larger. Obviously a Spal or something would be better, but if the e34 fan works it's 1/10th the price. I'm running a brand new radiator, 80 degree thermostat and 82 degree aux fan switch so hopefully I can stay cool.

Do you know anything about switching the coolant temp sensors? I've heard conflicting info on which, if any, to swap between the m30 and m20.

So youd only run one e-fan, in front of the condenser?

As far as the temp sensors go, I'm trying to remember what I used. I bought 2 new ones when i did my swap, but got them all mixed up with the old ones, until I didn't know which was which. But I believe I'm using the brown e30 sensor paired with the brown one prong plug, and the e34 blue sensor paired with the blue plug. Or something like that. If my engine wasn't in pieces I'd take a look and try to figure it out.

              Updates galore!

Next step before dropping in the motor was to cut off the radiator mounts to allow mounting of the taller, wider e28 535i rad

              KenC with the cutting wheel

I got the e30 heater hoses hooked up with the safety bypass so the heater core doesn't explode all over my shins

Mounted the diagnostic port and charcoal canister thingy

Here's a shot of where the e30 heater hoses get spliced in to the e34 hose

I picked up the RaceSkids x-brace to replace the Mason unit, hoping for more clearance. It definitely helped, but the sway bar will still hit under load when the engine is in. So i'll have to try and space it down a bit for more clearance.

I did have to notch the front mounting holes of the x-brace to fit with my e36 rack

Next up was getting the injector harness sorted. The plastic harness rail for m20s does not fit m30s because the injectors are spaced further apart. So I had to pull all the wires out and wrap them with electrical tape. It's ugly, so I'll either try and find the 735i harness cover or an early '88 325i harness wich has separate wires instead of the plastic rail.

                All ready to go in!

I got bored for a bit, and had some extra hi-temp silver paint. so.....

                  it's a tight fit!

                  Almost there...

It's in!! Honestly not as bad as I thought. With one person working the lift and 2 people keeping an eye on what's going on in the bay, we had it in in about 20 minutes.

Next up: trans and all the plumbing.

Good progress! But, good luck getting the tranny on there :) Why didn't you drop the engine and tranny together?

Even with a load-level on the engine hoist, is it possible with the subframe in? I had a hell of a time getting my M42+trans in... I can't imagine you could wedge the M30+trans in.

It's possible. With much swearing and gnashing of teeth.
