Wanted to make a little update to this. Been working on doing a m21 turbo diesel swap on this little thing. Got the m21 engine, spare turbos, spare head, spare intake, spare everything really... got 2 e28 524td harnesses and a 324td harness too to work with.

Did a little mock up on the m21 head with my bigger turbo, and my top mount intercooler. The intercooler needs some work to get it to fit perfect, but its close. I need to relocate the oil filler neck someplace else, not sure where yet, but I might do a remote mount that just drains into the dipstick tube.

Do a front mount and relocate the intake inlet to the bottom of the plenum, that will help with tube routing

Looking at a possible air-water system or a side mount insted of this intercooler.

Stock ran no intercooler, But I will be doing testing both with and without the intercooler. Just need to find a awd dyno around here.

Any issues using m21 engine with ix oilpan?

Shouldnt be any problems with the oil pan. The oil pick up tube will need to be "adjusted" maybe I can just swap the iX pickup into the m21.

So after reading the electrical manuals, I have figured out my c101 wires. So I can go from the square e28 plug of the m21(not the same as the normal e28 one) to the round e30 plug.
m21-----------e30
Pin 1--------->Pin 1....To inst. cluster charging indicator lamp
Pin 2--------->Pin 2....To check control, static oil level sensor
Pin 3--------->Pin 13...Fuel pump control
Pin 4--------->Pin 4....To cluster, coolant temp signal
Pin 6--------->..............Not used with e30 FI (integrated idle control)
Pin 7--------->Pin 7....12V to ign coil
Pin 8--------->Pin 18...To starter, from ignition
Pin 10-------->..............Not used on non-airbag cars? (would go to pin 20?)
Pin 13-------->Pin 10...To check control, dynamic oil level sen.
Pin 14-------->Pin 5.....To cluster, oil pressure warning lamp
Pin 15-------->Pin 11...To cluster, SI reset
-------------->Pin 16...Unused
-------------->Pin 20...Unused

I am going to order up a new c101 plug and pins and make the end of my m21 harness fit. I am also going to order up replacment plugs for all the old/broken plugs on the harness..... going all japandrew style on this harness.

Not sure about the M21 but the ix oil pump/ oil pan set (rear sump) is unique to itself. Even the ix block is different where the pump bolts on and where the bypass oil goes. Not to mention the pump spins backwards compared to a regular M20. Definitely not an "adjustment" , You may want to look closer at the oiling system before you get too far along.I like your project!
