I can finally has my own project thread! E30 318is content

Well i've been wanting to do this for a while. Swap a 24 valve into an e30. So i got rid of my 93 318is and part of the deal was that i get an m50 engine, so i did. I was gonna sell it and drop more cash into my e36, then i gotta crazy idea of selling my e36 325i too and using all that money to finally build me something i was dreaming on for a while and that's how it went.

    The car:

I was looking around for e30's with plastic bumpers and preferebly black when i stumbled across a 1991 318is with a m20 swap, in need of some TLC. Few phone calls and emails later i was in a rental Nissan Altima on my way to Augusta, GA to pick this thing up. I was honestly dreading it because i knew it was gonna brake down and i'd have to tow the damn thing 4 hours and pay pretty good money, so i said fuck it and went for it. Got there and when i drove it the car felt right, i mean the suspension is blown, needs paint, etc but she felt strong, so off i went on a amost 5 hr drive back to chattanooga, which turned into a 6 1/2 hr drive because of traffic in atlanta on a friday night. The brakes were spongy as shit so i was stay far away from cars and braking with transmission and brakes but i made it.

    So here she is:

Just a slow 4 banger as the badge says it

This was couple days ago when i swapped the oil pans on the engine:

Messy garage, but i promise i cleaned it up after i was done. :D

    Engine looks good inside

    She looks lonely :(

And the first battle scar, cut that sucker wide open on an exhaust pipe, it's almost healed up now.

But anyway, since then i've removed most of the engine accesories, most of the harness etc. Today i plan on finishing the engine strip and tomorrow we're hoping to pull the motor. I'll upload more pics later.

        Update:

Yesterday evening i removed the wiring harness, disconnected the driveshaft, shifter, pretty much everything that way in the way. Today we loosened the motor mounts trans mounts and got the engine out. Halfway thru tho, we had to take the trans off because the harbor freight special cherry picker doesn't go high enough to clear everything and the load lever was apiece of shit. So, separated them and got them out.

My buddy Corey celebrating the succesfull pull.

engine bay empty and dirty. Time for some cleaning.

Next up is e36 318ti steering rack, new tie rod ends, control arms, bushings, do the booster/brakes setup. I'm hoping to have the engine in withing the next couple of weeks.

I'm glad we got that bitch out today. Appreciate the parts Kenan.

Now the fun part... putting the m50 in. We need to try and do it on a day that both of our days off work line up like today.

Next we gota put my car together.

Get it running is my main concern, but i plan getting some GC coilovers with bilstein sports. I already ordered control arms, gotta do a single pipe exhaust prolly 2 1/4 into a magnaflow. can't decide if i want one or 2 tips. Do the bushings, swap out the 4.10 diff for something that's geared lowered. Basically build a fun daily/autox car. I've been autocrossing for a while now and i think this thing would be great. maybe a couple of track days, but basically refreshen everything.

I also, want to convert it to black interior, i don't think tan and silver go together that well, but who know, i may change my mind lol.

                    Update:

I got some more suspension parts in; control arms, bushings, tie rod ends etc. Got an e36 318ti rack, supposedly it's 3 turns lock to lock, i'm not sure if it is or not, but will still be better than the e30 i guess. Painted the booster, and cleaned the engine bay a little.

Here's some parts waiting to go on

                    Booster sanded and taped off.

                    Then a little primer

Then i painted it, it didn't come out as well as i had wanted it, i guess i didn't either clean it or sand it down good enough, but it's a brake booster and i don't really care hah. As long as the paint doesn't start peeling a week after i get it running.

Solid rotors, nothin special. I got them cheap at work so i'm gonna try them with those pads, if they don't cut it, i may go slotted
