Well guys I spoke to soon. I installed the newer higher quality unit last night and went for a (smelly) drive to the spray wash. At first everything seemed normal with the exception of the oil burning off of everything but the oil light was flickering. When I got home the oil light had started coming on more consistently throughout the RPM range. An oil pressure gauge confirmed the oil pressure was fluctuating between 40-60psi at higher rpm's, mainly above 3k. I'm not sure what to do at this point, I am torn between removing the engine and tearing it down or parking the car for the rest of the year and focusing on finding something else. I have a line on a 4.4 but this has really taken the wind out of my sails.

More bad luck!!
I had just installed the new alternator and low temp t-stat and was headed to the spray wash to get it ready for Cars and Coffee Saturday morning when I noticed a colossal cloud of smoke behind the car. I hit the next exit and jumped out to see oil pouring out everywhere. My first thoughts were that the oil filters had been punctured like Jgood's. I got it towed home and called it a night.
This morning I changed the filters and filled it back up with all 11 quarts. Upon startup it puked about a quart around where the oil cooler is. I removed the oil cooler and here is what it looks like:
The drivers side bracket is pulled off the body of the cooler a few MM's and the fourth row down is warped pretty badly. Only thing I can think of is I overtightened the AN fittings or it just plain old failed on me. Either way its a huge mess. Almost lost this engine last night.Last edited by dirty30; 08-12-2012, 09:40 AM.

Update on the trans issue:
Lock pin wasn't broken like I originally thought but the spring that holds tension on it was. The only possible explanation for the shifter intermittently not going into any gear was since there wasn't enough spring tension on the lock pin it was able to rotate in its orafice causing the relief cuts in the selector shaft to jam on the sides of the lock pin and not "roll" on the bushing like it is designed to do. I took it for a drive and the shift actuation is much for positive. Doesn't feel like I'm crunching it into gear any longer. It has a nice subtle "clunk" when going into gear. Everyone pray to baby jesus or allah or whatever that this fixes it and I don't have to pull this trans out!! What you can't see in the picture is the spiral pattern on the lock pin from it rotating in its orafice and the marks left on the end of it from the selector shaft mashing into it. I also don't usually wear pink nail polish, that's my girlfriends finger nail.Last edited by dirty30; 08-10-2012, 05:48 AM.

How is the power band, have you gotten a chance to get on it?
Throttle response? Traction? etc etc details :)
The fuel gauge functions just not when its ALMOST empty. I remembered this when it started to sputter yesterday.... then it died. Luckily I wasn't too far from home.

Edit: just finished reading the build, looks great! Kinda makes me wish I did not go the Massive booster delete on mine.Last edited by F34R; 08-06-2012, 08:05 PM.

Well Jgood's terrible luck is rubbing off on me. Here's some issues I'm having with the car after about 120 miles:
Alternator is weak. I noticed this when I was driving the 740il the engine was pulled from so I saw this coming. The headlights dim at idle and the battery light flickers.
The infamous 420G shifting problems have come and gone. The trans refuses to be put into any gear at random. I have the lock shaft on order so I'm going to put that in at the end of the week and see what happens.
Ran out of gas. I forgot my gas gauge never reads fully empty. My own stupidity!
Besides that everything is great. Did a little photo shoot I will post when I get a chance.

If you have time, could you list all the fittings you used to make this work? I'm really interested in doing this.
