GUTEN Long Term Project Cosworth II - Mindy

This is what happens when couple of car guys stay late at the shop, talking "what would be cool."

Last night Azad(Killacams), Emre and I were just talking cars, which led to a back and forth discussion on the greatest 80's era German cars.

Not having the budget for a "P" car... Yet. The discussion led to focusing on a car which is well balanced, light, easy to mod, parts readily available and fits the GUTEN 80's German car focus.

12 hours later, I give you Mindy.

1985 Merkur XR4ti, virtually no rust, blown engine, 60k on chassis.

Here is how she looks today.

That bi-plane rear wing is pretty cool...

"The bi-plane rear spoiler was changed to a single spoiler for the 1988-1989 cars; it actually increased the drag coefficient compared to the bi-plane spoiler of the earlier cars which have a coefficient of 0.32."

"The XR4Ti was on Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 1985. In 2009 however, the magazine's staff apologized for including the XR4Ti in their 1985 "Ten Best" list, and effectively recanted the award, citing that in hindsight it did not meet the criteria because it was 'odd looking'."

The idea is to make an RS500 clone along the lines of the Eggenberger car:

These things were 2400 lbs in Group A touring car trim, even with the extensive cage. Only question is what to do about the drivetrain?

I can get those sideskirts/fender flares here for pretty cheap, I wonder how much shipping would be??

                          What's wrong with the engine?

The car needs a 2.0L 16v turbo to really be authentic. However, a small-block Ford crate engine would definitely be cool. You can buy a rebuilt 302 direct from Ford Racing for $3500, which will give you S54 levels of power in a fairly compact package.
