316, 5 lug, BBK, Paint... and boost!

I bought this car a couple years back, I drove it around for a few months. Then the bug bit to strip it and start playing like with my previous 325i.

    So it began.

After all the stripping I found some rust which annoyed me and i lost some motivation, at which point I had thought of spraying the car a dark green.

It then stood for a very long time as I worked on the race car. Due to funds the race car has been shelved for the time being. Which made me start working on this car again. I got workign on it and decided it needed to stay white, but the Chamois white was a no go, I opted for Alpine III.

Although I'm not impressed with the way my paint came out and I'm going to wet sand it and repaint, but I'll leave it for a later stage. So I moved onto the suspension.

I started by fitting the rear 5 lug. e30 M3 hubs, e36 M3 discs and E46 m3 callipers... still need to find a solution for the hand brake.

I need to machine down the 20mm rear spacers to 10mm, as it stands the edge of the tyre just clears the fender but I would like the extra safety margin.

Hmmm... sub'd. I like where this is going. Those are my all-time favorite BMW wheel.

So I got it back down onto it's wheels (not after it tried to kill me tho!) It looks good, but the wheels are very very tight to the fender, I've got to options. 1 is to machine 10mm from the 20mm spacers in the rear and the other is to pull the fenders a bit more, both are viable options as I'm going to still paint the car again as I'm not happy with the paint job.

Then I've also started working on the interior, this is a quick snap to show some of what has gone into it, the wheel and knob are the same as in the race car.

Cool project! Are you going with the sleeve idea for fitting the front hubs?

Nah, I'm going to just use e36 coilovers because I have a spare set of AP Racing 5000+ 4 piston callipers and disks from the race car that I'm going to use and the hats are e36 ones.

So finally after much deliberation. I pulled all the spare suspension for the race car and fitted it onto this car. It has e36 coilovers, tubular arms, e46 rack, and AP 5000+ brakes... essentially the exact setup as the race car, except i'm running the softest spring thast we had for that car which is 800lbs.... eeek!

Now, I just need to find a set of wheels for the car. I've found a set of ARC-8 type wheels this side, but now I need to find out if they have e36 17" fitment. I plan on running 245/35/17 Toyo's as the current 245/40's are a bit tall.

I believe they do have the arc8's in e36 fitment. I do like the wheels on it though!

If you look closely at the rear wheels they extend past the arches by 50mm or so, as they are the wheels from the race car. If I could find another set I will fit them but I will remove some off the back spacing, to give it a 42 offset.

Here is just a picture of one of the small things I have done. My dad helped (well I should say made as he did everything except cut the old boot off the frame) with this new shift boot.

It's dark grey faux suede with green stitching.

and what it looks like with the stock shifter.

I've also been pondering a parking brake solution, of which I'm just going to fit a valve into the rear brake line and and use a manual lever to switch lock it for parking. I'm also switching out the standard master cylinder for a VW 25mm one (which is just a bolt in part).

I'm starting to research and collect parts for the motor, it's not going to be too crazy I guess. Just going to boost the m10 on stock components up to 1bar.

Wait, it has an m10? So it must be a 316 with no i, or does it have a m40?

To show I have been working on the car here is a sneak peak.

I've also slowly been re doing the interior, done the door panels in suede, still going to do the a and b pillars, and install an after market carpet, basically just speaker box fabric, as it's light.

I've been working on a hydraulic handbrake using the original lever as it has a ratchet, but I need to pick up a master cylinder for that. My dad is picking up a set of 17x10 and 17x8 Azev A's I hope they will fit, but then I also have a problem with tyres as I see people aren't stocking 235/40/17's anymore.
