17 year old m42 turbo build.

So I got my 318is about 2 months ago. Was a good car, and then hit a curb and did a little bit of damage. So now i'm ripping the engine out which had about 201k miles on it and rebuilding it. While i'm at it, i'm going to be doing lots more work to the car to restore it to it's past life. Hopefully this thing will be as clean as I imagine it will be when it is done. Well just sit back and enjoy the (very slow) progress. And as you can see, my garage space is very limited. Well i am starting out with pulling the old m42 out... here you go.

Now here is the question..... to cam or not to cam? and how aggressive? or should I just stick with the stock cams and such and just have them cleaned up well, and then follow up with a turbo later?

And what do you all suggest for exhaust?

Well here you guys go, Got the motor all torn apart, just waiting for machine shop work to be done and then putting it all back together. Also looking into more goodies.... sparco evo 2 with takata harness.... Full cage. Other stuff to come. Picture updates.

Just picked this up today.... too bad the guy already sold the takata harness. I was very disappointed.


Installed my europlate last week... still havent had pictures up of that, but they shall be soon. Stay posted.

Not much of an update.

Dropped the engine off and some other stuff at JB auto to do my machine work. Hopefully they dont take too long. Well, skid plate is on the way along with some new wheels(not quite yet actually). Need to order mounts for my sparco. Otherwise, here is what we are currently looking at.

Know it's been awhile....

Well, im almost back to the stages where the car will be back on the road. Thank goodness! Anyway, everything is back and awaiting to be put back together. Painting some engine parts and whatnot just to give it a nice clean finish. Cleaned up the engine bay alittle and also got a skid plate.






Also!!!!! Got some Miro-STPs with basically new Kumho Ecsta XSs on them. Rims are 16x9 et15 with 205/45s on them. Some teaser pics. Looks completely HORRIBLE right now. Ordering GC conversion kit and whatnot sometime soon as well. Obviously, rolling and maybe some pulling of fenders will be needed, but its all a work in progress.

Haven't posted in awhile due to lack of time, but I have made good progress. Well, the engine is back together and I am happy at this moment. Here is a timeline of the engine rebuild.

1. Got everything back from the machine shop.
2. Ordered all the parts.
3. Started to put everything back together, broke a main bearing cap bolt in the engine block(luckily got it out), but then I ended up buying all new bolts for the engine and a lot better torque wrench.
4. Hmmm, Got the crank on, but guess what, didnt order any extra rings and I bent a ring putting one of the pistons in. Just to be safe, I ordered a new set.
5. Continued the next weekend putting it all back together, then noticed on Friday night... Where are my headbolts, accidentally didnt order them with my second order. I overnighted them(wow, some expensive shipping that is).
6. Got the engine all back together, what a joy that was. Then put it into the car.
7. Got all the hosing and wiring hooked up, everything ready to go and start the car. Went to double check everything, the timing was off a chain.... Here we go again. Adjusted the timing on the cam gears, and there we go.
8. What more trouble, the coolant pipe to the engine block wasnt sealing up right, so when I went to add coolant, it was just leaking like crazy out of it.

As you can see, I havent had the best of luck, but hey, I am still happy with everything. Enjoy a picture timeline of the build. Wish I would have took a lot more, but I was too busy getting aggravated.

Yes, it is very difficult to put the engine in without taking the trans out first, but we went that route anyway

How do my cam sprocket teeth look to you guys? They are pretty damn pointy in my opinion.

Yes. Soon this car will be turning into a turbo m42 monster! I will get pictures up tomorrow.

I got the full setup off of another member who had to get rid of it.
Anyway, this is the set-up as of now:

Turbonetics turbo t3/t4
Megasquirt ecu
New VAC 42 lb/hr high impedance injectors
Aem uego air fuel meter
Turbonetics wastegate
Blitz blow off valve
Spearco intercooler
custom mandrel bent 3 inch piping from turbo all the way back to
3inch Magna flow turbo muffler
Tapped oil pan

I have been trolling the forums now for awhile and have decided it is time for some more power, especially with a refreshed engine. My closest friend also resides in the E30 community. Many of you know who he is, FUNFGAN. We are just two dumb 17 year olds. But what to have against us. I hope you all can help as I go through this build. Also, some more background on me is that I go to school for engineering and currently have a paid internship at Stanley Black and Decker. So yes, if you need tools for cheap, I can get them. Anyway, I will be posting pictures and trying to document this build the best I can. Tomorrow I will for sure have pictures up of most of the turbo stuff, so stay posted.
