    2002 rescue...I hope.

A family friend of mine got in touch with me about helping him get his 1974 2002 working again. He bought it with 12k and now has 199K.

As of right now it does not run. Its hasn't in ~5 years. Details have been lost but apparently the owners son was driving it when the rad cap HOLDER popped off the rad. It was towed to the owners house and there it sat.

This is how I found it. 4spd with sunroof and cloth interior. Unoriginal paint. with all I can see some rust on the rain gutters. A quick check of the towers and they look good.

I peak inside and noticed that there are rodent droppings and sure enough, I pop the hood, and there was a mouse looking up at me! The car has been under a tarp for most of those years so mold and mildew started to take over the interior but too bad.

But one of the main problems is that I noticed that the spark plugs were not on the engine but sitting off to the side. Im not too sure what to think about how the cylinder walls will be or what shape they are in. I would think they are rusty but I dont know.

Is there any hope for this engine? Should I just look for another M10 or should do a tuneup and hope for the best? This is its second engine. Im told that it has an upgraded carb. idk. It does have oil and since the rad car has been off, the block is probably dry.

Im looking for some help and direction. I know Ill need to replace...
    spark plugs
    plug wires
    cap and rotor
    radiator
    battery
    belts

Im posting here because I know there are some members that know alot about these little cars. Ill post this on 2002faq as well.

This has the possibility of being a long project as its currently 45 min from my place but the owner said he would look into a garage closer to me for me to work on it. I have passed 2 opportunities of owning a 2002 and know it looks like I kinda have another chance.

    Here are some more pix.

    Cheers!

Oooooh...I am excite. We can definitely bring this thing back. Worst case scenario, we can rebuild what's in there but I would look into grabbing another motor.

Let me know when you want me to work my magic on that paint. It looks very salvageable.

Have you thought about an M20 swap? I have a line on a free ETA motor we could swap in there! An ETA powered 2002 would be a great driver....

Yeah, im kinda looking for another engine but even still the new parts I throw at this one, i will use on the "new" engine. The owner said the garage will be around NCSU so not too far from me...as you know. The owner wants to paint it the original color which iirc was light blue. But you are right, there is plenty of life left in the green.

M20 swap will prolly be out of the question as he want to keep ot mostly stock just wants it running. Im not too sure what alls involved for that swap. Honestly, if it were me, an M42 or M44 would be nice in there.

Ill let ya know if you wanna come up and help turn a wrench.

I got the privileged of sitting in a 2002 w/ a m42 swap and it was pretty damn awesome.
        So I say drop a turbo'd m42 w/ a nice suspension setup and call it a day.

very nice project, not familiar with the color but it looks neat next to your e30!

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

One of these days we'll both be rolling to Korman in '02s. And yeah, I'll probably be putting the 'rati wheels on it. :)

Let me know when you're heading up there and need a hand. I'd love the chance to turn some wrenches on that car.

looks like it has a weber 32/36 with a water choke.
i would try starting the car, but first check the fuel lines for cracks (old car!), replace fuel filter and oil filter, replace spark plugs, and do a oil change and coolant flush, drain the gas and replace with new gas.
when you start the car use some carb primer.
it is going to take some time to start.
there is a shit tone of wires floating around in there ha?

I like this idea but am unsure of what it would take to make it work. Maybe I need to look into this. The main goal is get it road worthy but I will keep this in mind. Thanks.

How can I tell what carb it is? I havent messed with a carb in 20 years. Whats the best way to remove the gas in these things? There are a lot of wires but then again, so has the e30. Im sure is gonna take some time to start and I think some of my inexperience will be how to diagnose the carb adjustments...which I will not do.
