    Another E30 GRM Challenger

So, I've been lurking around here for a little while gathering information for my GRM $2011 build and I figured it was time to introduce the project and maybe get some help from all great members of this board.

I've been wanting to put something together for the GRM challenge for quite some time and I finally have the time and support I think I need to get it done. I've never owned any BMWs, but I've always liked the E30s for their clean/simple lines. I spent a little time while at GA Tech helping out with Wreck Racing's old challenge eta and thought I'd like to build my own some day. Fast forward a few years and I'm finally well on the way to having a car ready for 2011.

    In short the plan is:
    • 325e with i head
    • turbo
    • megasquirt
    • stripped interior, glass, etc
    • widest & stickiest tires we can find (that will fit under rolled stock fenders, don't think I want to get into major bodywork yet...)
    • wheels to make the tires fit
    • stiffest springs we can find
    • and a lot more I havn't got figured out yet

Earlier this year we found an 86 325e in Tennessee and picked it up for $500.

It had a broken odometer and an estimated 300k miles but drove ok except for a major vibration on acceleration (we later found out this was the center drive shaft bearing, which was almost non-existent).

The interior was absolutely nasty... covered in dog hair and quite a bit of mold in places. Obviously, other than hurting the budget by reducing the potential parts we could sell off the car we didn't really care since we wouldn't be needing much of the interior.

As I said, the current plan for the engine is a simple head swap from an 325i, turbo, and megasquirt so we decided it would be easiest to just yank the engine.

We pulled the eta head off to have a look at what 300k miles has done to the engine. The cylinders look fairly good, so I think we're off to a good start there. Most concerning was the buildup in the coolant jackets which can be seen below.

Here is a look a the head gasket where you can see the coolant passages are almost completely blocked on the exhaust side (I think ?) with the same goo. We are thinking its some sort of stop leak gunk, but I'm not sure how we are going to get rid of it from all the coolant jackets and elsewhere.

A trip to pull-a-part yielded us a head, intake manifold, etc off a 525i. Here it is sat on top of the eta block.

That's all for now, thanks for looking. If you have any tips, advice, or a line on some cheap parts please let me know.

Welcome. I love the GRM builds because it gives me ideas. Usually pretty entertaining seeing people come up with new ones too.

I have been reading GRM since 2000 and love the builds. Looks like maybe oil in the water in the jacket pic's? Good luck with the build. Remember the guy that took a 81 320i and shoehorned in a 500ci caddy motor and had to drive from the back seat . Classic.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! :D I'll try to update this thread as often as I can. I too have always liked GRM build threads. One of my favorite aspects of the challenge is the freedom you have to be creative, it makes for some wacky entries.

Thanks, I'm a big fan of your E30. I really liked it when it was in its warbird guise and it has only improved from there in every way. There is a lot we still need to figure out so I'm sure we'll have some questions along the way.

Spent a few hours at the Pul-a-Part and came out with an LSD from an 87 325is. Should be a 3.73, not too bad for around $65!

Time for another small update. We've mostly been cleaning up all parts we've collected so far. The ihead is not in as good shape as it appeared. We took the cam out and discovered major scoring on the bearing surfaces (which I don't have any pictures of), I think we're just going to go with it and see what happens. We also found some pitting (maybe detonation) in the cylinder dome which you can see in the pics below.

We also recently purchased a Megasquirt 2 and JimStim from diyautotune.com. So far I've only put together the JimStim and hope to get the MS2 built and tested this week.

                    Assembled JimStim

                    Lame time lapse of assembly...

Next on the list is finding a turbo, figuring out a turbo manifold, and o-ringing the block...

I'm also researching our options for a clutch. The clutch we have is an almost brand new stock replacement. I don't think it's going to have much of a chance holding with the power we are going to try and make. So far it looks like our best option is a used clutch from an e36 M3. Anyone have any other good ideas for a clutch?

                    Thanks for looking :)

oh yeah, we've got a build blog up and running now.... we'll be calling ourselves el diablo speedshop.

Do you think we can get away with just smoothing it out the burrs on those pits or do we need to fill the pits? If so, between that and the hosed cam bearing surfaces its probably going to be less work to just find another head without so many issues....

Depends on how much you gonna give for it..but id see how well the the pits cleaned up first.. Then decide if buying another head is needed.

You can take a porting bit or scotch brite to the scoring on the head.

If I were you I'd run the almost new E30 clutch over the used E36 M3 clutch. My Sachs stock clutch has 10,000 miles and counting on a 10psi 2.7 M20.

Flip the manifold and make a y adapter mate to a t3 flange. Simple, cheap, and easy.
