My parts are starting to build up! Looks like I need to get to work. And I have orders coming from eEuroparts and BavAuto this week.

So on top of the Shift Knob being in shitty condition (top snapped off), PO glued it on. So what should have been like a 30 second quick easy, has become complicated. Any suggestions? Only thing I have thought of is taking a dremel to it.

Got new rotors and pads and all the mounts for suspension today so can finally start getting to work. I've been waiting on odds and ends to continue each project. New motor mounts for headers, New thermostat for water pump (PO decided it would be best to take the old thermostat out because it kept getting stuck closed? He was a smart one), etc.

Half of the spare bedroom in my apartment is now full with parts. Work + Summer Classes is not leaving much time to work on the car though. Hopefully can get a lot done this Saturday/Sunday.

Haven't updated in a week or two. This one is going to be a lot of pictures! Finally got some work done.

We got the old shift knob off!

        Parts!

Also got all of the suspension/rotors/pads done:

        Had a stripped bolt! :(

Guys, look at this shock from the passenger front. Waaaaaaaaay, beyond blown.

        All done:

        Cleaning up the interior:

        Misc. Stuff :

        New hood strut:

        New fuel filter:

        Rust spot in the trunk:

Finally starting to look like a car and not something that should be at the junkyard! haha. Let me know what you guys think!

A lot more complicated then I thought it would be! :

Kinda a bit late, but you did this one the hard way. If you pull the knobs off, and the faceplate behind it, you will find four screws that hold the sliders in place. Remove those, and the HVAC panel becomes a 10 minute job. Just some advice for next time....
I saved 15% on my Bimmer parts by switching to ...

Yeah - I figured that out like a week later... Oh well, live and learn.

Put the 'is' spoiler on. Pretty much got it first try.

And I finally got a fuse box cover!

Today was an interesting day. Started off good....

                Fixed the taillight gasket:

Took her to the car wash. And no leaks in the trunk! yay!

And then... On the way home, some awful grinding noises/vibrations started....The vibrations were so harsh that it knocked the shift lever out of the gearbox. Luckily didn't start till I was almost home so we were able to pretty much coast back into my parking lot. Had no idea what it was coming from - checked the differential fluid but it was at a good level. Then lifted up the front of the car, PO didn't even have the gearbox support mounted - the bolts were there but no nuts. And the bolts had a good amount of grease caked on them so the nuts didn't just pop off. So, basically my tranny was hanging in the car purely because it was connected to the engine. Crazy.

Anyway - got underneath the front of the car to connect the shift lever and look at my guibo. It is in pretty bad shape.

Ordering a new guibo tonight, do you guys think I will need anything else - like driveshaft or center bearing or anything? Also, how does the shift lever stay mounted in the gear box I slid it back in but it popped back out again - did I just not slide it in hard enough? Like should it click?

Order brand new guibo bolts to go with it. A new center support bearing would be good too since you're already in there doing the work.

Thanks! Do you know if I get the Guibo with the 10 or 12mm bolts? Some sites say it changed for 'e' in May '86. Some just have the one 12mm one. Realoem has the 10mm. So I don't really know which one to order.

Well...look at the date of production on your car. There should be a sticker in the driver's door jamb that says when exactly your car was built.

No one on the forums knows any more than you do when it comes to ordering the right bolt for YOUR car. :) Just find out when your car was built.

06/1987. Just unsure cause different sites are saying different things? I am not unsure on the bolts, confused on the Guibo to get - there are 2 different ones. Like Blunttech only has the Guibo for 12mm bolts. PelicanParts says when I put my info in (06/87 M/T etc) to get the 12mm one and at BavAuto and eEuroParts it has both when I put my info in. Just don't understand why RealOem says the 10mm one? That is what I have gone by for everything else.

Probably just over thinking it. Just don't want to order the wrong part.

Haven't updated in a month or so!

                          New guibo is in!

For all of you that told me not to buy a harbor freight impact wrench in my "opinion on impact wrenches" thread, you can now say I told you so.

I bought it for 29.99 so I didn't really expect too much, but man was it s-h-i-t-t-y.

Breaker Bar ended up being my savior for this job. And some of Devon 818's muscles.

Can anyone make out if there is a "S" on my diff. tag? I know it says 3.73 than has like a 5-digit number after it, but it is pretty hard to read. Would the "S" be before or after the 3.73? Trying to see if I have LSD or not.

Also since I had to take the exhaust out for the guibo, I am putting my BavAuto headers in.
Getting a picture for fitment in my head.

                          Old Exhaust:

Man, the exhaust manifold gaskets were in bad shape.... haha.

Test fit them. Would have been actual install, but I probably need new exhaust studs cause the old nuts are stuck on them pretty good.

                          Tried soaking them in PB:

Then I tried to use a pipe wrench to clamp the stud and a ratchet on the nut, but they still wouldn't come off. Any ideas from you guys on how to get them off - or just get new ones?

Also, changed my motor mounts while doing all of this

That's all for now. Summer classes are just about over so hopefully I'll be able to get more work done this last month before school starts back up!
