    As far as rust in this area, check the lower trim on the side window - if it doen't seal properly, water gets in and runs down inside the quarter panel and sits in this lower area.

    Interesting - the battery on my touring is under the hood, not in the rear fender.

    As far as colour, I'd leave it silver since that's how it was born. Royal blue 198 would be another choice, but I'm biased.

    Battery acid is my best guess. After I had my car redone I left an old sears charger on my battery for a week trip. Came home to a garage that smelled like sulfur, unplugged it and later that year found my battery tray rusting out and had to repair it.
