M50 Engine Purchased. Time to begin. Vert Swap

Just skip all the B.S. Below because this swap took a u-turn a few months back and I will essentially be installing a complete and very clean M50 from a 95is that had 109K on the clock. The engine is so clean you could eat off it. I got a trans brace and just bought an e21 brake booster. Now I just need to freshen up the engine on the M50 (rear main seal, pilot bearing, etc, and install the oil pan.) I will also be installing a steering rack from a 95is too.

ALL POSTS UP TO #18 ARE WORTHLESS SO JUST SKIP AHEAD TO THERE

Actually I lied, I'll begin this weekend because I am out of town but I did purchase a used m50 with a blown headgasket and all accesories including dme for $120. Once home from my vaca, i will begin removing all tHe accesories and remove the head to inspect the deck for warp. If it is warped I'll either kill the swap or if the price is right clean up the warp and move forward. I have no idea how many miles are on the clock or anything else really but for a hundy how could I pass it up.

Fortuantly for me I have kingston near by and he is already elbow deep into his swap so I can glean some info from him as I proceed. I have a guy about 20mi away parting an e34 and will sell me the oil pan and stuff needed for swap for 70 buck so all in all I will have less than $200 into a complete motor swap. I will need to spend cash on parts like the gaskets, seals and such but I don't plan on putting this motor in until it is completely ready since my m20 is rock and roll. As for pics I will post once I return from vacation. Any educated opinions are welcome.

    Frank!

Cool to see you starting on your build thread, man! When you get back in town, Jamison and I will come out and help you get this thing kicked off properly!

OK so since this post a while back I have basically given up on the M50 I bought and will be picking up a clean basically ready to drop in M50. Over the weekend I went to the junk yard and after hours of wrenching pulled a e34 oil pan, oil pickup, dip stick and tube. All for $19 and 2.5 hours of my time. (probably would have been faster if I knew what I was doing) Today I took the oil pan to my local machine shop to have them parts wash it and DAMN does it look GREAT.

Now I basically need to pay for the motor I am getting (just put a deposit to hold it) and will need to acquire a couple of things, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, o ring, motor mounts, e34 throttle cable and a couple other things. Getting excite about this and happy I don't have to rebuild an engine. (the one I am getting has 119K on the clock).

While at the junk yard there was a miracle of an e30 VERT which is SUPER RARE at the local salvage yards so I was able to pull some trim pieces which was freaking rad since they were all nice and cost six dollars total!

All I have for now is a pic of my clean azz oil pan so enjoy!

Dude, so glad to hear that you're back on track with this! I'v learned so much from Damian, Jason and especially Tim, that hopefully I can be of assistance to you. It's funny: I think that you, Jeremy (DriftingMinor) and Jamison (JCarp90) are all going to be working on M50 swaps at the same time. I think we should get them all in one place and work on them at the same time!

Your oil pan looks great...jealous of the parts washer! It took me forever to get my pan to look like that...with a brush and Purple Power!

Can't wait to see more updates!

5 bucks at the local machine shop to wash the oil pan and associated parts. Best money spent today.

No real news. Just made half what I owe the lady for her m50. Yeah if Jamison want the old one we can work it out. There has to be 5 machine shops within a few miles of you.

Jeremy, yep. Didn't realize they had a machine shop. I don't own a truck, so I never paid any attention to the place! DOH!

Frank, yeah, I need to find a machine shop. :)

Based on our text conversation, it sounds like you are going with the Getrag 260. That's the easiest way to go, since then you can still use your stock driveshaft, shift carrier, etc. You will need to have your shift lever bent slightly, since the transmission will be rotated some.

Going to have to wait a short bit for the trans brace. Need to dump all funds into the acquisition of the motor. BUT I have 90% of it tonight and the rest tomorrow. I hope to have the motor here at the house by the end of the day tomorrow. Then I hope to begin buying other stuff within a week.

Nice, Frank! Are you planning on doing any maintenance to the engine, or just dropping it in the `Vert? I'd at least do the main seal, if I were you. They're cheap, and easy to change when the engine is out of the car...but impossibel when it's in the car!!
