You are correct. I like how you took photos of the whole process, but you really need more practice with your torch cutting skills, and probably welding too. You can make cuts nearly as clean as plasma with a torch and that'll save you tons of time(money) with prep. You're not getting close enough to the metal surface when your cutting, going too fast, and I normally cut going the other direction too.
